LEGO Lord of the Rings coming in 2012!

(Written by William)

For years LEGO fans have been asking LEGO to either get more historical sets or to pursue a famous fantasy setting. Well, thanks to LEGO’s dealings with Warner Brothers, it looks like fans will finally get the fantasy side of things.

On December 16th LEGO announced that they will release Lord of the Rings LEGO sets as early as June of 2012. This is to go along with the two Hobbit movies scheduled to be released by Warner Brothers.

WHERE IS THE PROOF?

I know how much LEGO fans hate empty promises. Therefore, below you will find the official announcement from LEGO. It is long, but it’s totally worth reading as it is full of interesting tidbits about the upcoming LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS sets. Basically it says that they will most likely have a multi-part release schedule for at least two waves of LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS goodness! 😛

Warner Bros. Consumer Products and The LEGO Group Build on Partnership to Produce Construction Toys for THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy and the Two Films Based on THE HOBBIT

In late 2012, LEGO THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY will give fans of all ages a chance to build and play out the fantastical story and new characters of the legendary Middle-earth adventures depicted in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, slated to premiere December 14, 2012.

“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. Consumer Products has delivered numerous worldwide successes in the construction toy aisle with lines like LEGO HARRY POTTER and LEGO BATMAN, introducing us to loyal audiences who love great stories, strong characters and the toys that they inspire,” said Jill Wilfert, vice president, licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. “It’s particularly exciting to now be able to create sets based on the fantasy worlds and characters from THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and the two films based on THE HOBBIT, not only because we know they will foster collectability and creative play, but also because these are two properties that our fans have been asking us to create for years.”

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of two films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit.  The second film will be The Hobbit: There and Back Again.  Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released beginning December 14, 2012.  The second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is slated for release the following year, beginning December 13, 2013.

The screenplays for both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham.  The executive producers are Alan Horn, Ken Kamins, Toby Emmerich and Zane Weiner, with Boyens serving as co-producer.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again are being co-produced by New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. with New Line managing production.

Warner Bros Pictures will be handling theatrical distribution for most of the world and MGM will handle all international television licensing and theatrical distribution for certain international territories for the films.

WHERE TO CHECK FOR MORE INFO?

Aside from crawling around every LEGO forum you can find on the subject, LEGO has set up with Warner Brothers an official site for the new LEGO Lord of the Rings line. This is designed to give fans updates on the process as well as pictures of the new line when they become available. You can find the site here: LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS website.

If you don’t think you can wait for this site to update, you may try following some of the big shows. This could include some of the toy shows in New York or the pop-culture conventions like Comic-Con.

FANS AND THEIR PRECIOUS

Here is a final thought before we close; In the past, LEGO has taken fan designs with no credit given the creators. For instance, if you designed anything in LDD, you have agreed to give LEGO permission to do this.

Since there is little to no recourse for fans on this matter, I’d suggest keep an eye out for other fan’s work. Note who designed that really awesome LEGO Lord of the Rings MOC and let others know if LEGO steals the design. Often the first designs LEGO creates may already been out there. So take a moment and do a search for a LEGO Lord of the Rings MOC or two. Chances are you may see it on a store-shelf very soon. 🙄

RUMORED LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS SETS

Here’s a list of set numbers and names that were posted at the Eurobricks and Brickset LEGO forums. Whether this list is true or not, only time will tell.

  • #9476 LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS The Orc Forge – I haven’t seen pictures of this set just yet… 😕

SUMMARY

There’s no more wondering whether Lord of the Rings is coming to LEGO. It is a reality. The thing to keep in mind is that LEGO has access to all the Lord of the Rings material, but that does not mean they will make everything we may want.

"There and Back Again" - Bilbo from The Lord of the Rings by Blake Baer

From the announcement it sounds like the first release in June will deal with the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And the later release will focus on the first Hobbit film scheduled for December of 2012. As you know, this leaves a lot of ground for LEGO to cover and not a lot of sets to do it in.

So what do you think? Are you looking forward to the Lord of the Rings LEGO sets? Share your thoughts below!  🙂

This is awesome and should have happened years ago (to coincide with the 3 LOTR movies). My only dilemma is how I will intergrate the new flesh-colored minifigs with existing yellow Castle-knights minifigs :-S Its not just a case of switching heads and hands as many torsos also have yellow printed on them 🙁 I look forward to seeing what LEGO will do with the Gollum minifig 🙂 Please, LEGO, do NOT use dwarf minifig legs with a standard torso! That would be unconvincing and lame.

Nick, on the pictures I have seen it was really hard to make out Golumn. He didn’t appear to be a regular minifig, but again; it was hard to tell. Unfortunately the videos I have seen about the new sets have been taken down by LEGO Legal, otherwise I would have give you the link. 😈

From what I could tell, it looked to be smaller than the hobbits, which were the standard short leg with minifigure body. I’m guessing they’ll be doing either a single piece or a specialized piece like the monkey. But the images that I saw as well are still preliminary images.

As for the flesh color, I suggest treating them as different kingdoms. For instance, the flesh colored minifigures could be considered a very northern kingdom where they don’t get a lot of sun. But that’s just my suggestion.

I doubt that Lego will steal Blake Baer’s LOTR MOCs for their sets. Blake’s MOCs seem to big and too many pieces and too complicated for Lego to sell as a set. If they did it would hae to be like their Ultimate Collecters Series. 🙂

    • admin December 20, 2011, 2:38 PM

Quad, yeah it is unlikely that LEGO will steal Blake’s designs. They are just too detailed and gorgeous! However LEGO has been known to seal fan designs. Maybe not something as elaborate as Blake’s, but those that would fit into the official LEGO-set style. I guess the moral is; if you don’t want LEGO to steal your designs build something really big and awesome! 😆

What fan designs did lego steal?
Also, how did you see pictures?

        • admin December 20, 2011, 6:07 PM

Akiva, the pictures are from next year’s dealers’ catalog. Here is the link. Enjoy! 🙂

I will let Will answer your other question. 😉

        • Will December 21, 2011, 11:20 PM

They are usually holiday sets like many of the Halloween designs. I also saw one of the Star Wars space ship designs where the master builder actually said he got the design from a friend who was a fan and simplified it.

The other instance that comes to mind was a story in which a fan created some holiday sets and posted up instructions. Well LEGO then took the designs, made them into sets and then asked him to take his own instructions down.

I don’t think anyone has put out a list of all the set designs that LEGO has taken. I just know I’ve ran across people talking about it on different fan forums, on more than one occasion.

    • Will December 21, 2011, 11:08 PM

Knowing LEGO, they sometimes will dumb down an idea and possibly just take a part of it. In most cases, they can’t hope to match the dedication and intricate detail of a fan.

Yes, it seems that Legolas is without a cape. It is very likely like you said; there is the long hair-piece and also the quiver. 😉

Do you know when in June these are coming out? My son’s birthday is June 11th and he freaked out when he saw this was coming up.

    • admin April 30, 2012, 10:45 AM

Brian, the official release that is June 1st, which means I would expect to see them at Toys’R’Us, Amazon and maybe some other stores a week or two before. So, I’m pretty sure they will be available for your son’s BD. 😉

  • claire carroll May 8, 2012, 3:09 PM

what date will lego lord of the rings come out NOT what month OR what year i just really need to know because i must have them and i know it comes out in june PLEASE REPLY PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    tom carroll

    • admin May 8, 2012, 3:33 PM

Clarie/Tom, there is no exact date for a release. It depends on country, region and individual stores. For example the LOTR sets are already available for pre-order on Toys’R’Us website. (This is in the USA though, I don’t know about the UK.) Please note that the official release is for LEGO’s own stores, but resellers (like TRU, Amazon, etc.) often start carrying new sets 2-3 weeks before.

I would suggest calling your local LEGO store as well as larger toy-retailers in your area and ask them when they will have the sets in. It is likely that you will be able to get them a week or so before the June release. Good luck! 😉
