LEGO brickfilms behind-the-scenes tips & tricks

You have seen those fun LEGO stop-motion videos from the BrotherhoodWorkshop, right? We have featured several of them here (see links at the bottom of this post). They are always funny and the animation so smooth – just a real pleasure to watch and enjoy! 🙂

Today I would like to show you another video from the brothers, this time taking a behind-the-scenes look at creating LEGO stop-motion videos. Here Kevin Ulrich shares some of their tricks like animating multiple characters, materials used for backgrounds, using clay for the ground-surface, adding special effects, software and other tools used, etc.

If you are interested in LEGO brickfilming this video is just a wealth of information and offers some great ideas. It doesn’t go into great detail like a tutorial, but it does introduce some important subjects, and if you have questions you can always ask Kevin directly. Oh, and I can’t believe that’s Kevin’s voice for animating Gollum! 🙄

So what do you think? How did you like the behind-the scenes look into the BrotherhoodWorkshop’s studio? Did you learn anything new about the LEGO brickfilming process? Or picked up a cool trip you are planning to use? Share your thoughts in the comment section below! 😉

This video was very helpful.:D I’m still not too good at stop-motion, but I’m hoping to get better.:P

Same here. I love stop-motion (even though I’m not that good at it). I just brought myself a good “white” light and got a program called LSmaker (Light Saber maker) which allows me to make my LEGO lightsabers “glow”. Hopefully I will find some spare time in the future to get a brickfilm started. Kevin Ulrich does an amazing job at brickfilming and I am always on the lookout for more of his great videos!

these are the type of stopmotion movies i really want to make. The quality of his animations are incredible, and I never really thought about using clay as the main surface… Brilliant!!!

  • Awesome! In just a few hours, I’m going to try to make a small film. All of his videos have inspired me.

His videos have also inspired me to become a better brickfilmer. 😉

Micho, yeah, the Internet has been buzzing with the news. There are now also more detailed pictures on Flickr. It is not a theme I would be interested in, but some of the parts and minifigs are sweet. 😀

    Hello Sir,

Though I’m not looking to do a video, I am interested in doing several still shots of lego scenes as a small side project to me normal routine. Do you use any macro lenses at all? And did you paint your own mountain backdrop?

Also, why aren’t you doing this for money? With your skill, I’m surprised you don’t have a paid subscription.

Michael, I’m not sure if the brothers still visit this page and if they will see your question. It is probably best if you get in touch with them thru their Facebook page (linked in the article). Yes, they are very talented film-makers. 😀
