Infographic highlighting LEGO’s popularity

As you probably know, Target is one of the largest LEGO resellers, at least in the USA. In fact, at least in my area, they have a much better LEGO selection than Wal-Mart, and they even beat Toys’R’Us in both selection and definitely prices. Recently Target published a fun infographic in their online magazine called A Bullseye View.

LEGO at Target

As you can see from the infographic below, LEGO is the largest brand in Target’s toy department, Target stores sold 4.5 billion LEGO pieces in 2013, according to their research LEGO tops kids’ wish-list, and December is the biggest month for LEGO sales at Target.

LEGO Infographic by Target

Target has been also riding the popularity of The LEGO Movie by launching a whole The LEGO Movie section in their stores as well as online, featuring everything from LEGO-shaped luggage-tags to sketchbook, and of course all The LEGO Movie sets.

LEGO has definitely been on a winning streak in the past several years (despite the slumping economy) which was evenย brought to new heightsย by the success of The LEGO Movie. I think any smart retailer would take advantage of the trend, but surprisingly, I have only seen Target really capitalizing on it – smart move, I would say…

What do you think? Do you shop for LEGO at Target? How do you like their selection? And how about their discounts and special deals? Feel free to share your thoughts – and the deals you found at Target – in the comment section below! ๐Ÿ˜‰

It’s true that Target usually has the best selection of LEGO in any store (except of course, the LEGO Store). It’s really the only store I buy LEGO from but occasionally I buy from Wal-Mart.

Yes, I do the same. They also have good sales, so it is a fun place to stop by for LEGO shopping. I know a lot of people got scared away from target over the recent stealing of credit/debit card info. But we can always use cash. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • SuperSpyX March 16, 2014, 1:16 PM

I buy almost all my Lego at Target. The only thing they lack are Technic sets, so I have to go elsewhere for them, but overall they have a great selection. I had to get a new credit card because of the leak, but it hasn’t made me afraid of them. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have bought from Target, but I usually get my Lego stuff from Walmart, because it’s the closest to me.
But everything was sold out (at both Target and Walmart) in February. ๐Ÿ˜•
The LEGO Movie seems to have made Lego very popular. ๐Ÿ˜

    • admin March 16, 2014, 1:42 PM

This reminds me; I was at my local TRU yesterday and they had TONS of full boxes of The LEGO Movie Collectible Minifigs. I was very surprised as it seems like it is sold out at most places.

      • BLProductions March 16, 2014, 1:48 PM

Aw, man! I wish I lived near that store! I want some TLM Collectible figs. ๐Ÿ™ But they’re sold out at my Walmart, probably at my Target, and there’s no…wait, maybe the toy store down my street has some. I must check that place soon. ๐Ÿ˜

        • admin March 16, 2014, 1:52 PM

Yeah, I was really surprised. I picked up a couple of small sets and 3 minifigs; Bad Cop, the Mermaid, and the Taco Guy. They were $4 each though. I have heard that was going to be the standard price from now on. ๐Ÿ™

          • Crazybricks March 16, 2014, 9:09 PM

I have those three minifigs plus larry the barista, President business, and Abraham Lincoln but my favorite is Taco Tuesday Guy

            • admin March 16, 2014, 9:25 PM

Yeah, I like the Taco Tuesday Guy too, and the peppers in his plate. I could have picked up more minifigs, but I really wasn’t expecting them to be there and it was kind of late to go through all those boxes. Maybe I will go back and get some more. ๐Ÿ™‚

Target is new in Canada and their Lego selection is very poor, worst than Walmat and ToysRUs. Two other Canadian based stores even have a better selection here: Mastermind Toys, and PlayValueToys. Target doesn’t even have an online store here in Canada!

    • admin March 16, 2014, 1:51 PM

Geoff, that’s very interesting! I didn’t know Target was that new in Canada! Here is is definitely one of the best places to buy LEGO (and of course many other things). Maybe they will improve as they figure out the marketplace.

  • Kim March 16, 2014, 2:49 PM

Target is pretty good with their Lego selection. I don’t buy from them often because I usually buy my stuff online but they generally are well stocked with minifigures and I have found some sets on sale. TRU where i live has a larger selection but they play around with those prices quite a bit, sometimes marking stuff up like a collector / re-saler (and don’t get me started on those people because I’m not a fan of that). I still think Lego.com is the best and probably Amazon except for marketplace seller markups. And of course Ebay sometimes has good old stuff and some new stuff.

    • admin March 16, 2014, 3:17 PM

Yep, that’s pretty much my strategy too: the Online LEGO Shop, Amazon, eBay and BrickLink. However occassionally I just have the craving for a little something interesting and new that I haven’t built before… there is something to be said about the benefit of just being able to walk into a store, pick out a LEGO set and go home and build it. Although I have to say I also like to receive big boxes in the mail. I guess there are plusses and minuses to both methods, so best to indulge in both. ๐Ÿ™„

Anyhow, it is impossible for me to go to Target or Wal-Mart, even if all I’m going for is some toothbrushes, to not take the bee-line over to the LEGO-isle, just to see what’s there. And then something jumps into my cart and I’m helpless.

  • CMJ March 16, 2014, 2:54 PM

Yeah, I concur with Geoff about Canadian Target here in my city. Way less selection than other stores. I’d wager Toys R Us still has the most, but it’s funny sometimes I see something at Walmart that I haven’t seen at TRU, or vice versa.

  • NinjagoNerd36 March 16, 2014, 4:29 PM

I normally shop for LEGO at Target. However, since the LEGO Movie came out the shelves are pretty empty of sets. I’m going to see if they restocked soon though.

  • ninja of stealth March 16, 2014, 6:00 PM

that’s funny because my target isn’t that great, its not as good as Wal-Mart.

I have the advantage of one of the UKs flagship lego shops 15 mins from my office. However in my experience most of the toy shops and supermarkets in the UK carry limited ranges unless you can get to the reallly big out of town stores. So for me it’s ebay, amazon and bricklink with occasional trips to the lego store for the bigger sets. Picked up the haunted house and two kingoms chess sets last time I was there.

    • admin March 16, 2014, 9:23 PM

A LEGO shop 15 minutes from your office? Lucky you! The reason I like LEGO shops is because they display the most LEGO sets (at least here in the USA). It does help to see LEGO sets actually out of the box, and fully built. No matter how many pictures and videos I see online, seeing a set in person is always a different experience. However the closest LEGO shop to me is 2 hours away, so only go a couple of times a year.

Here also most LEGO retailers carry a limited range. Usually the most popular themes like Star Wars, Ninjago, City, Chima, Friends… I have rarely seen the really large sets or exclusives, but TRU and Target does carry more than most retailers. Unfortunately they lack displays. My TRU usually have three, Target two, and Wal-Mart none. ๐Ÿ˜•

  • Tom March 17, 2014, 4:28 AM

Agree with the displays. I was looking at the parisian restaurant and didn’t realise how small it was (comparatively) to the other modulars which has put me off. It would end up an awful lot for a parts set! Also made me change my mind on the sydney opera house – now that is utterly stunning in the shop and much more impressive yhan it looks online.

And finally yes I’m lucky to have a lego store round the corner its just a shame that the PAB walls are not great ๐Ÿ™

  • ninja5 March 17, 2014, 9:58 AM

I know this is off topic, but brickforge is having a sale where every couple of weeks 30 items go on sale for under $0.30! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • admin March 17, 2014, 10:55 AM

Where did you read that? I just checked their website and there is no announcement of such a sale, nor have I received an email about it. The last sale they had was the 50% off all loose items – as far as I know…

      • ninja5 March 17, 2014, 12:09 PM

If you go onto their website and click shop, there is a bar of tabs on the left of the page. The bottom one says 30 under .30, click on it to see what’s on sale. Also, they were a little late getting out the newsletter email for it. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • admin March 17, 2014, 12:10 PM

Oh, I actually got an email about this. I just found it in my spam-folder. Nice sale! I will definitely be getting the two new Centaurs as I love those! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • ninja5 March 17, 2014, 12:10 PM

Oh and admin, how do I change my account picture?

    • admin March 17, 2014, 12:15 PM

Go to gravatar.com to set up your avatar. It is very easy. Just make sure you use the same email address as you are using here. Once you are done setting it up, all your comments (even previous ones) will show your new ID picture. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • ninja5 March 17, 2014, 2:13 PM

I don’t own a website, do I have to own one to set up a gravatar account?

    • admin March 17, 2014, 2:54 PM

Hm? No. You just need an email address.
