LEGO Exo Suit set revealed!

After so much anticipation and teasers that drove LEGO Classic Space fans nuts, the #21109 LEGO Exo Suit set has been revealed! This is the 7th LEGO fan created set that came out of the LEGO CUUSOO/LEGO Ideas program. LEGO kept the announcement short and to the point: “We hereby present LEGO Ideas #007 the Exo Suit by Peter Reid. This video was co-created with LEGO fan Chris Salt. The Exo Suit will be available in early August.” Yeah, what else is there to say? 🙂

#21109 LEGO Exo Suit Teaser

The above picture was one of the teasers Peter Reid (the original submitter of the LEGO Exo Suit) posted in his flickr gallery the day before the reveal. Then yesterday morning came the following video showing the LEGO Exo Suit in all of its glory…

In the meantime a member of Brickset discovered a picture that shows everything included in the set; the Exo Suit itself, a “turtle” (if you don’t know what a “turtle” is, you really have to check out Peter Reid and Tim Goddard’s book, LEGO Space: Building the Future, read a full review here: LEGO Book – LEGO Space: Building the Future), and two green – yes, green! – astronauts with the LEGO Classic Space logo on their suits.

#21109 LEGO Exo Suit Details

I’m very-very impressed with the LEGO Exo Suit. As we have discussed previously (see links at the end of this post), the original submission of the Exo Suit, although awesome looking, was way too fragile to be released as a LEGO set. LEGO fans were deeply concerned that LEGO designers would not be able to keep the details, while also making the set sturdy enough. Once I heard however that LEGO designer Mark Stafford was working on the final design of the Exo Suit in close communication with Peter Reid, I was less worried, and more filled with anticipation. Mark Stafford is one of my favorite LEGO designers, well known for his amazing space-crafts and mechs. (Below is a picture of the original LEGO Exo Suit submission by Peter Reid, so you can compare.)

I’m not going to say anything more because I know that at this point all LEGO Classic Space fans have fainted already from all the awesomeness. Just one more thing; the #21109 LEGO Exo Suit includes 321 pieces and will retail for $34.99 beginning August 1st. In the meantime you can check out other LEGO CUUSOO/LEGO Ideas sets at the Online LEGO Shop.

So what do you think? How do you like the LEGO Exo Suit set? Do you think the final design lives up to the original submission? And what do you think of the video and the green LEGO space suits? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

Yep. A few days ago we briefly discussed on Google+ whether to get the female scientists set or not, but there is no discussion to be had for this one, definitely one of the most amazing set I have seen.

LegoUniverse Bob July 5, 2014 at 1:21 PM

I like the animation, and being a big fan of mechs, I’ll get it when it comes out. 😀

Kim July 5, 2014 at 1:39 PM

So am I seeing that correctly? A new space suit color, green?

admin July 5, 2014 at 2:06 PM

David, yeah, this is a no-brainer. I’m definitely getting one, and possibly more. I also love Peter Reid’s book and always wanted this mech from it. One day I want to build a whole layout like he got. 🙂

admin July 5, 2014 at 2:09 PM

Yep, green spaceguys (well, one is actually a girl). Never before seen! I was reading yesterday on Reddit that Mark Stafford basically had three choices for the spaceguys color based on LEGO’s present color production: black, which blended in too much with the mech, blue to match Benny, but that was too obvious, and green, which was never done before. Peter Reid really like the idea of green, so they went with that choice. What I was reading in all LEGO forums is that people are absolutely crazy happy about this! 🙂

A tip; if you can’t buy the LEGO Space book, check out Peter Reid’s Flickr pages. Lots of great pics of the turtle.

I am loving this mech. It’s so…greebly? Is that a proper use of the term? Anyways, I haven’t been as anticipating for a Cuusoo/Ideas set since the DeLorean, and while that was more due to my love for the movies, this one is really for the sheer awesomeness. I’m no big Space fan, but Mechs are one of my passions. Hey, any chances this will be available in France in about, give or take, first week of August?

CaptainChespin July 5, 2014 at 2:52 PM

Green! My favorite color! XD I am DEFINITELY getting one of these. 😀

Well, the official release is August 1st, and my understanding is that’s the worldwide release-date. So yeah, I think it should be available. But get it as soonas ou can. Mark Stafford said there is only going to be one production run, and I know a lot of LEGO fans looking forward to this.

O_O I want it so bad. I’m going to try and order it when it comes out, any idea what the price will be? Also, Classic is spelled wrong in the beginning JSYK.

Kim July 5, 2014 at 5:04 PM

I’m not big in to space but I think it’d be cool to have the green space person. I may have to get this one and have it as a display model or have fun making it ravage through Legoland sometime…LOL

admin July 5, 2014 at 5:09 PM

Fixed that. For some reason I often spell classic as classis. Fingers get mixed up or something. The price is in the article: $34.99. 😉

admin July 5, 2014 at 5:09 PM

Yeah, that’s my plan too… mayhem and destruction. 😈

In an earlier post I had stated that the fa

ce of the spaceguy (sorry for the two split posts my tablet started shaking and I accidently hit submit) was not Zane, but the Russian Soldier’s. It’s true that Reid uses the Soldier’s face in the original, but I think in the final product it is indeed Zane’s face, because the Soldier’s face is flesh color, while Zane’s is yellow.

BLProductions July 5, 2014 at 8:36 PM

Yes, yes it is Zane’s face! I was right!! 😀 It’s right here: 😛

CaptainChespin July 5, 2014 at 10:20 PM

IMO, that’s a great deal! 😀

NinjagoNerd36 July 6, 2014 at 12:33 PM

I am definitely going to ask if I can order this the day it comes out! 😀

BLProductions July 6, 2014 at 12:36 PM

I can’t understand why I like this so much, as I knew nothing about this until recently. But now it’s top on my to-get list, mostly b/c it is limited production. My assumption is that you will have to get up early on August 1st to buy it, as it probably will be sold out by the end of the day. And, as mentioned, they’re not restocking it. It’s the Mars Rover over! 🙁

admin July 6, 2014 at 1:12 PM

If you are buying online, yeah, you should either get up early, or stay up late (depending on where you are). New sets are always listed 12 AM EST. If you live close to a LEGO store you are probably safer as a most regular consumers are not aware of new sets until they see them on the shelves.

BLProductions July 6, 2014 at 1:40 PM

My nearest Lego store (in terms of how long it takes to get there) is about an hour away, in good traffic. 😉 Plus, I can’t buy online, and parents will not buy anything until December. 😡
Are Ideas sets exclusive to Lego, or will other stores (i.e. Walmart, Target) carry them? 😕

admin July 6, 2014 at 1:56 PM

LEGO Ideas sets are only available through LEGO. Although sometimes the very large TRU stores may carry them as well. It is best to buy them directly from LEGO.

Fikko3107 July 6, 2014 at 2:07 PM

Yeah, I just heard of the whole one-production-run thing. It sent a chill down my spine. I’m going to pray there’s at least just one little copy for me…

admin July 6, 2014 at 2:12 PM

As LEGO fans we have a very large and supportive community, so don’t be afraid to ask around if you could set up some kind of a deal with someone. Maybe someone can buy one for you at a location that makes sense and later you can meet up and pay them back, or trade for something else… there are many good people on Brickset, Bricklink and here as well who are happy and willing to help out.

Erock July 7, 2014 at 12:20 AM

Love the green spacemen. Definitely getting one of these! 😀

The Watcher July 7, 2014 at 12:48 PM

I’m considering getting two of this set: one to build, and one to keep and sell when the run is over…but I can’t trust myself to not build the other one.

LEGO knows how to drain it’s customer’s wallets. 🙂

admin July 7, 2014 at 9:36 PM

Yeah, I have considered that too and have the same fear. We need to have like a safe where only a trusted family member knows the combination. 🙄

A Man Dude Guy Thing July 9, 2014 at 6:19 PM

Um, I was just wondering, is that price above American or other? I’m Australian, so I want to know.

admin July 9, 2014 at 7:25 PM

The official price haven’t been announced yet, but yes, that is what it is supposed to be for the USA. I’m not sure what it will be in Australia.
