New LEGO elements in 2015 – Part 1

(Written by BLProductions)

In 2014 over 120 new part designs were created for LEGO sets. That’s a huge amount! I did not have a chance to write about those, but I would like to cover what’s coming next year as far as new LEGO elements – at least the ones we already know about. So let’s take a look and discuss the new pieces created for 2015 LEGO sets! 🙂

#60084 LEGO City Racing Bikes

So far, I’ve managed to identify around 18 new pieces coming in 2015. Not very many compared to this year, is it? Note that this number doesn’t include LEGO DUPLO elements, new printings, or minifig parts. The new parts will be shown in a list containing my guess at their part names, the color(s) they appear in, and the sets I have found them in so far. I’ve included images of 2015 sets the new parts appear in to give an idea of what they look like. Also, note that as we get more new set images for 2015, the number of sets these pieces are included in will likely increase.

Plate 2X6 W. 2 Bows – This is quite a nice piece, and looks useful for creating smooth bends on a car. Hence its usage on three of the new Speed Champions sets: the #75899 LEGO Speed Champions LaFerrari, the #75908 LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari 458 Italia GT2, and the #75910 LEGO Speed Champions Porsche 918 Spyder. So far it comes in medium-stone-gray and black, and it’s easiest seen at the front and back of the #75910 LEGO Speed Champions Porsche 918 Spyder.

#75910 LEGO Speed Champions

Plate 1×2 w/ 1 Hole Underneath – This was a tricky one to identify, as I found it hidden on the #75076 LEGO Star Wars Republic Gunship, and only a search for it elsewhere led to identification. So far it only comes in medium-stone-gray, and appears in three sets: the #75075 LEGO Star Wars Microfighters AT-AT, the #75076 LEGO Star Wars Microfighters Republic Gunship, and the #42031 LEGO Technic Cherry Picker. It’s easiest seen on the #75075 LEGO Star Wars AT-AT, as it holds on the legs.

#75075 LEGO Star Wars

Windscreen 4X6X1 – This is a neat windshield piece, in the usual transparent-brown color. It is used on three of the LEGO Speed Champions sets; the #75899 LEGO Speed Champions LaFerrari, the #75908 LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari 458 Italia GT2, and the #75909 LEGO Speed Champions McLaren P1. It also appears on the #60085 LEGO City 4×4 with Powerboat. Another new piece similar to this one is the Windscreen 4X5X1 1/3, also in transparent-brown, that appears in two LEGO Speed Champions sets: the #75910 LEGO Speed Champions Porsche 918 Spyder and the #75912 LEGO Speed Champions Porsche 911 GT Finishing Line.

#75908 LEGO Speed Champions

Peg Bush 1M – I must thank someone over at Brickset for pointing out this piece in the #70170 LEGO Ultra Agents UltraCopter vs. AntiMatter set. LEGO Technic builders have had a need for this kind of part, so it’s good to finally get it. It comes in dark-stone-gray, and so far appears in the above mentioned LEGO Ultra Agents set – though it’s no doubt there in other 2015 LEGO Technic sets, just not visible on the pictures we have so far.

#70170 LEGO Ultra Agents

Panel 5X9 W. Angle, Holes – This is a relatively easy piece to spot as it is quite large; you can find it in yellow on the #42035 LEGO Technic Mining Truck as the sides of the truck-bed (the large angled pieces). It’s nothing too fancy, but still neat.

#42035 LEGO Technic

Blade w/ Shaft Ø3.2 – This is a interesting piece that seems to be important in the LEGO Ninjago world, as the Ninja are after them in the #70752 LEGO Ninjago Jungle Trap, #70753 LEGO Ninjago Lava Falls, #70754 LEGO Ninjago Electromech, and #70755 LEGO Ninjago Jungle Raider sets. I’m not sure on what color it is, but my guess is trans-green.

#70752 LEGO Ninjago

Feather 5M W Ø3.2 Shaft – Another blade-like part in flame-yellowish-orange that seems to be good as either décor or a weapon. It comes in #70221 LEGO Legends of Chima Flinx’s Ultimate Phoenix and #70223 LEGO Legends of Chima Ice Bite’s Claw Driller.

#70221 LEGO Legends of Chima

Motorcycle Fairing 2 – This is like the Motorcycle Fairing pieces we’ve been seeing in LEGO City a lot, but the front is completely redesigned to be more streamlined. It comes in bright-red in the #60084 LEGO City Racing Bike Transporter, with stickers on the sides.

#60084 LEGO City

And that concludes nine of the current eighteen new LEGO elements for 2015 (we will discuss the other ones in Part 2 of this article). As we get more images of new sets, we’ll likely see these pieces elsewhere, and possibly in better view. In the meantime, you can check out all the current 2014 sets from the above-mentioned LEGO themes at the Online LEGO Shop.

So what do you think of these new LEGO elements? Are you finding any of them particularly interesting and/or useful? Are you interested in getting any of the sets these parts appear in next year? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

You forgot to include the new mirror brick in the Detective’s Office set, in the nearby barber shop.

    • admin November 25, 2014, 10:24 AM

As the title and the article says; this is the first part of his article. 😉

      • Diamond655 November 25, 2014, 11:49 AM

Yeah. Also, will you be including new minifigure accessories besides the new blade pieces? If so, those scissors will be a good place to start next article. 😉

        • admin November 25, 2014, 12:11 PM

BLProductions wrote this article, so I can’t comment on what he will include in the next part, but I assume he will cover those as well. 🙂

    • BLProductions November 25, 2014, 4:48 PM

Oh, you are right. But I only saw the press release a few days ago, and by that time the article was finished. Sorry. It looks like the count is up to 19! 🙂
About your second comment, no, I will not be including any minifig accessories except possibly one in the second part. There are just two many new minifigure parts LEGO puts out each year for me to document them. I included the blades here because they are not strictly minifig weapons in themselves, they are only part. However, at the rate we’re going, I may have to make a Part 3, in which I will include the scissors, as they did catch my eye, and I’ve been trying to fit them in. 😉

120 new elements last year(not including minifigures, prints, or duplo) and at least 18 new known parts in new sets so far is a little frightful.

What ever happened to lego using the parts they already have in their arsenal of existing parts in new and interesting ways? Is THAT why 2014 was such a lacking year and 2015 isn’t looking any better??? B/C lego was more worried about creating a bunch of new specialized elements and NOT on focusing on making good sets?

If I want to spend my money on weird parts, i’ll go on bricklink or the newly discovered 25 cents bin at the Flea market(only have done it once, and I want to do it again!). However, when I am seeking a high quality set with a clever use of existing parts, it seems like I should be able to turn to the lego company to fulfill my needs.

    • admin November 25, 2014, 12:42 PM

Sherrie, it is not that bad as the numbers seems to indicate. ALmost all of the new parts are specialized elements like the cute animals for LEGO Friends, minifigure accessories and parts that are required for licensed sets. In the regular parts list LEGO always makes sure that whatever new part they ad is going to be used in many sets and serves a very important purpose. For example the next smaller ball-joints that were released in the LEGO Mixels sets have been long requested by both LEGO fans and LEGO designers. 2014 was a particularly strong year for excellent LEGO sets in every category, and nothing changed as far as the usability and connectivity of LEGO elements.

    • BLProductions November 25, 2014, 5:11 PM

Yeah, 120 is a big number, AND that’s only about half of the total new design IDs created this year. LEGO created hundreds of new printings, plus a lot of minifig head pieces, head moulds, and accessories.
I agree with LEGO poor showings recently, to me it seems 2013 was LEGO’s last good year, and even then there were poor sets. But I am speaking as someone who has fully analyzed the Star Wars line.
Most of the parts created this year are quite useful, and can actually help LEGO cut prices on sets. Really, there were more plates, bricks, and Technic parts than funky pieces (excepting Legends of Chima, that wave had about 16 new elements).
@admin, I did not include even one of those hideous animals in my reckoning, which is why I said “over 120.” But yes, The LEGO Movie contained a LOT of new minifig head molds and accessories, as well as Star Wars. Also, according to Brickset, there are 2497 new elements this year. But that includes new colors of existing parts. 😉
And speaking of licensed sets, here’s a fun fact: the six minifig-scale Minecraft sets created 11 new part molds and over 18 new prints.

I think the Technic pin bushings are wonderful.

  • Kim November 25, 2014, 3:19 PM

Off topic, I watched the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies from the 90s this weekend, and now I want turtles in my city. Unfortunately I don’t like an of the sets. Probably have to look at bricklink to get the figures, though, considered buying knock offs…not sure what to do.

    • admin November 25, 2014, 3:34 PM

I think the original turtles are very cute. I also got all four of them on BrickLink. I don’t care about any of the sets either. And the turtles in the new sets are so ugly! But the original ones are really sweet. Don’t buy knockoffs. The quality is horrible and the print comes off within a month. Just not worth it.

      • Kim November 25, 2014, 4:58 PM

        K. I’ll look at Bricklink

  • Anthony Forsberg November 25, 2014, 6:46 PM

Where is the Peg Bush 1M in the cherry picker? I’ve stared at that picture for at least 5 minutes and can’t see it anywhere! though I think I might see it on the agents helicopter, but I’m not sure, so I want to cross-reference it with the one on the cherry picker.

    • BLProductions November 25, 2014, 8:05 PM

Hm… Well, I thought there were four, but your problem caused me to look a little more closely than usual at the Cherry Picker, and it seems you are correct in not seeing any: there aren’t any! 😯 I was sure there were, but it seems they are all “Keys” ( http://brickset.com/parts/4210655 ). 😕 So, thanks for bringing that to my attention, and thanks to my brothers for fully identifying them. However, the UltraCopter still has them (this I am sure of); they are on those roundish trans-light-blue parts on the side.
admin, you may have to change this. Just delete the phrase “as well as the #42031 Cherry Picker” and change the pic to the Ultracopter. 😉

      • admin November 25, 2014, 9:20 PM

I’m working on an other article right now, but I can do that for you afterwards. 🙂

  • Håkan November 25, 2014, 9:14 PM

I have some trouble identifying all these parts in the images. It might become clearer if you include additional images showing only the parts.

Btw, for everyone interested in new Lego parts, you should check out the blog “New Elementary”, with frequent and well written posts on the subject.

    • admin November 25, 2014, 9:19 PM

I agree on both; I love the New Elementary, and I agree that additional pictures would have helped. BLProductions actually tried to strip out just the parts from the official set images, but the quality was so low that after discussing it we decided to just use the full set images. Maybe circling the parts would have helped though. Something to keep in mind for future parts in the series. 🙂

      • BLProductions November 25, 2014, 9:47 PM

Agreed. Maybe I just crop the image down to the region where the piece is?
I don’t read New Elementary, but I really should expand the sites I visit, Brickset after all doesn’t have everything. I will check that out soon, hopefully tomorrow.

        • admin November 25, 2014, 9:52 PM

New Elementary posts very infrequently (like once a week or even less), so it is easy to keep up and it won’t take away your time from hanging out here and on Brickset. I highly recommend the site. 😉

        • admin November 25, 2014, 9:53 PM

I was thinking of just making a red circle around the piece, or point an arrow to it. Both are easy to do and it won’t take away from the quality of the image.

          • Håkan November 25, 2014, 11:39 PM

Ah, so there are no official images of only the parts themselves, yet?

            • admin November 26, 2014, 10:30 AM

Official images of new elements usually don’t come out until the sets are out.

            • BLProductions November 26, 2014, 5:26 PM

No, I won’t have those until Brickset updates the set inventories from Lego.com/customer service, and those don’t come until a few days after the sets’ release. But I’ve gotten pretty close to having just the parts. 🙂

              • Håkan November 27, 2014, 8:38 AM

                Sounds good.

  • Chris of Yoda Archives November 26, 2014, 12:18 AM

Admin said I could share this here.
I wrote an article on my blog about a LEGO related kickstarter project. The project is Vera bricks and it uses custom bricks to connect LEGO to Hot Wheels Tracks. They designed a brick that instead of studs on the top has the flat track connector piece. There’s also bricks that grip the track.

    read it here. http://tinyurl.com/versabrk

  • Ray November 26, 2014, 9:48 AM

Does the new element count include minifig pieces? In the past few years I think the largest amount of new bits has been for minifig heads on licensed properties (and also Chima), other associated parts like tails and TMNT shells, specialty minifig weapons, and big figs. The Constraction stuff (Bionicle, Hero Factory, etc.) also creates an enormous amount of heads, armor, and weapon parts that see limited or no reuse.

    • admin November 26, 2014, 10:35 AM

Yes, that’s what I have seen also; lots of new minifigure parts and acccessories, but I’m not sure what HPproductions considered for the number for last year. He did mention he will not be including them for this year’s list as there are just too many.

      • BLProductions November 26, 2014, 5:24 PM

Ray, no, I haven’t included minifig parts in my 2015 part count. For 2014, I actually have a whole Word document for parts, and it contains 120 different pieces. There are about ten minifig parts or accessories on that list, not including the Minecraft. Chima is a new-part hog, with 16 new parts this summer, while Hero Factory actually only produced 8 new parts this year. Bionicle sets next year are going to have 30 new pieces though. So, yeah, construction and minifig parts are out. 😉
