LEGO Nexo Knights haunted statues?

I was browsing LEGO’s Facebook page, and found a series of pictures of some strange statues. They are apparently related to the upgraded LEGO Nexo Knights: Merlok 2.0 app. I thought to share the images here as the artwork is pretty… let’s just say… unusual. 🙂

In the third season of the LEGO Nexo Knights animated series, the main badguy, Monstrux, turns into a storm cloud. According to LEGO’s description on Facebook, The Cloud of Monstrux is transforming statues all around the world to be part of his Stone Monster Army. I’m not sure if this statue-turning plot is also in the game, or it is just an excuse to release some cool artwork with haunted statues.

There are four statues in the series. The first one depicts a famous bronze sculpture from Italy, with a she-wolf nurturing the abandoned twins Romulus and Remus from the legend of the founding of Rome. The second picture is of the Bavaria Statue from Germany. Notice how the wreath in her raised hand was replaced by a LEGO Nexo Knights shield. The third statue is of a Chinese guardian lion, and the last statue is of The Little Mermaid from Denmark (also holding a LEGO Nexo Knights shield).

Again, I’m not sure why LEGO decided to add famous statues to advertise the LEGO Nexo Knights app, but maybe some of our readers who play the game regularly can shed some light on it. Nonetheless, the artwork is interesting. The pictures link to the LEGO Nexo Knights: Merlok 2.0 app page. And you can also check out the recently released sets related to the story at the LEGO Nexo Knights section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? Do you have any insights into why LEGO added these images of haunted statues? Have you been playing the game? How do you like it? And what do you think of the new storyline? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

What???? These are so weird and cool at the same time. Is this the first time Lego is depicting naked people in their advertising?

    • admin April 18, 2017, 1:10 PM

Well, they are famous statues, not real people/animals. I guess that’s what LEGO was thinking.

  • legolol April 18, 2017, 1:06 PM

could admin censor the naked pic cause im pretty sure there are a lot of little kids looking at website. Apart from that cool way to combine old carvings and lego:)

    • admin April 18, 2017, 1:08 PM

These are LEGO’s own ads… for kids, advertising Nexo Knights. I’m sure they thought this through. Or I hope so! 🙄

The boobaloobas are pretty shaded, as it is…

Then, traditionally, nudity isn’t such a big deal in Scandinavian culture…

(These examples might be marketed internationally, though…)

        • admin April 18, 2017, 9:43 PM

That’s very true. Americans are much more prudent when it comes to nudity. Except in California. 😀

The kids will be fine. After all, these are all public statues in real life anyone can see. My kids think the artwork is cool. Still, I’m surprized lego decided to choose these from all the statues they could have picked. They usually like to stay away from anything that could be controversial.

      • admin April 18, 2017, 3:44 PM

Yeah, it’s a bit surprising for sure.

        • Håkan April 18, 2017, 5:50 PM

It’s Den Lille Goldarn Havfrue, for chrissake!

Surely they’d have to represent their vi-er-røde-vi-er-hvide colors when they’d get the opportunity.

            “En storm er på vej”…

          • admin April 18, 2017, 9:42 PM

I have no idea what that means, but it’s coming from you, so it must be good. 🙄

It’s a classic Danish soccer anthem from 1986. (We are red, we are white, we stand together, side by side.)

(Although I was too young at the time, and mostly remember it from the Euro cup six years later, when Denmark won after coming in as a reserve team, as Yugoslavia had collapsed into a state of civil war… Dang, already modern history…)

Ahhh… they look so happy. And dressed so 80s! 😀

  • jabber-baby-wocky April 18, 2017, 1:20 PM

Naw, they are great. I like the first comment on their FB page for the little mermaid: “Let them run with it”. 😀

    • admin April 18, 2017, 3:43 PM

LOL! I saw that comment too. 😀

  • FrenchToast April 18, 2017, 2:16 PM

Interesting. Very interesting. So how does this play out in the game? Does the game itself have these statues? Or is this just advertisement?

    • admin April 18, 2017, 3:48 PM

I’m actually not sure if these specific statues are in the game also, as I haven’t played the latest version. The idea is that Monstrux is bringing statues to life to join his army, but whether the Little Mermaid and the other ones pictured here are going to be part of his army, I don’t know. Maybe someone who plays regularly can confirm either way?

  • nexo scanner April 19, 2017, 7:02 AM

in the beginning of season 3, Monstrox gains the power to animate stone and stone statues. that’s probably the link. Late in season 3, one of the nexo knights gets turned to stone.

One of announced, but unreleased summer 2017 sets includes a minifig of the “stoned” knight.

season 3, episode 1 is available to view on Lego’s YouTube channel

other than that, I don’t really know why Lego decided to use real world statues.

    • admin April 19, 2017, 8:54 AM

Yes, that’s what I know as well. The question is if there is any reason they choose these particular statues.

  • Håkan April 19, 2017, 4:33 PM

Alas, now there’s a rumor that this would be the final year of Nexo Knights…

    https://brickset.com/article/27598/is-nexo-knights-coming-to-an-early-end

Although I could kinda enjoy the over-the-top wackiness, and my recently 6-year old nephew seemed to enjoy it. (I bought him two sets on sale, although his mother has them stored away currently for future occasions…)

    • Håkan April 19, 2017, 4:35 PM

I don’t think the boobaloobas are to be blamed for its possible demise, though…

    • admin April 19, 2017, 4:41 PM

That’s just an unsubstantiated rumor at this point. At least in my opinion the post would have been more appropriate for the Brickset forum rather than the main site. But I very much respect Huw, and it’s his website, so he can do as he likes. The summer sets were already displayed at the toy fairs. Pulling them now would require some huge apocalyptic reason. I think it is more likely that the summer sets would be the last wave, but we will see…

      • Håkan April 19, 2017, 4:58 PM

At least, it lasted two years, pretty decent track record either way…

        https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Nexo-Knights

        • admin April 20, 2017, 10:22 AM

Yeah, I think the theme had a good run. I think a major mistake was that they released too many vehicles, making the whole series very similar to Ninjago. The castles were the best and most imaginative.
