2014 LEGO The Hobbit sets pictures!

(Written by Meneldur)

At last we can finally take a look at the new LEGO The Hobbit sets based on the second film, The Desolation of Smaug, that will be released this December. The LEGO Hobbit sets will be released around the same time. (All images are from TheOneRing.net.) So let’s see what we got! ๐Ÿ™‚

โžก #79013 LEGO THE HOBBIT LAKE TOWN CHASE: we have talked about this set before as it was first displayed at the San Diego Comic-Con this summer (see: LEGO The Hobbit Lake Town Chase Coming!). Included in this set are the exclusive Bard, Lake Town Master, and Lake Town guard minifigs. Also contained in this set are Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin comes with a new printed torso in this set. The buildings are comparatively small to other structures released in the LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO The Hobbit lines (such as the #79003 Bag End, the #9474 Helmโ€™s Deep, and the #10237 Tower of Orthanc) yet they are nicely detailed with a jail-cell, slanted roofs, and a weapons-rack. Furthermore, there are several dark-brown and dark-green elements that are always a useful additions to a LEGO collection. A small Lake Town boat is included as well.

โžก #79011 LEGO THE HOBBIT DOL GULDUR AMBUSH: This set includes an exclusive Beorn minifigure and two awesome Gundabad Orcs. I find the new Orcs a great addition to the previously released versions, and Beorn is very interesting looking. Also included is a gateway (perhaps the gate to Dol Guldur?), complete with spinning axes, a swinging hammer, a deadly Orc catapult, and of course flick-fire missiles. This set can be combined with the bigger #79014 LEGO The Hobbit Dol Guldur Battle.

โžก #79012 LEGO THE HOBBIT MIRKWOOD ELF ARMY: This set comes with an exclusive and amazing Thranduil minifigure, two Gundabad Orcs, a Mirkwood Elf archer, and two Elven guards. Also notice the all-new dark-brown Warg! If you already have the #79002 LEGO The Hobbit Attack of the Wargs set, this one is going to be a nice addition to the pack. The more Wargs the better! I will definitely be getting this set; not just for the minifigs and the Warg, but also for the many tan elements.

โžก #79014 LEGO THE HOBBIT DOL GULDUR BATTLE: One notable character included in this set is the exclusive minifig Radagast. Radagast – being a main character in The Hobbit films – is a must-have for collectors. Another important character is the Azog minifigure, that was previously only released at the San Diego Comic-Con in very limited quantities. Also in this set are two Gundabad Orcs, Gandalf the Grey, and the Necromancer (Sauron). It is very interesting that LEGO chose to include the Necromancer in this set. Another interesting feature is a magic ring hidden underneath the statue. This is most likely Thrainโ€™s ring that was taken from him during his torment in the dungeons of the Necromancer. The detailing of the fortress gives it the true feel of Dol Guldur. Like the other sets of the LEGO The Hobbit line, this set comes with many useful colors and elements along with several fun traps and functions.

        who cares about “first comment”?

  • legostuff71 October 23, 2013, 11:50 AM

Yes, I must have these sets. I hope the prices will come out soon too. So, I know how much money I can spend( an early Christmas gift to me from me.) Oh, and for the record , remember when everyone was so disappointed about the AROG mini fig that was handed out selectively at comic-con. (including myself). Well, now everyone has a chance. Luck us.

these are awesome! but I have a question, how come the barrel escape was released before the second movie, because if you have seen the trailer for the second movie they are escaping in barrels and in the first movie there isn’t anything to do with this barrel escape set? but other than that I’ve found the LEGO the hobbit sets quite impressive… outstanding! marvelous! cool!

    • admin October 23, 2013, 12:04 PM

Originally the film was planned to be two episodes, so the barrel escape scene was part of the first movie. Later it was decided that the movie will be in three parts. However by that time it was too late to stop the LEGO sets from being released, so the Barrel Escape set was released as a special preview set. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Ninjagonerd22 October 23, 2013, 12:13 PM

I have no clue how they are going to stretch a 200 page book into 3 three-hour long movies.

        • JediToa October 23, 2013, 12:52 PM

Well they are adding parts of the Silmarillion in the movies; e.g. battle of Moria. They will probably add in many of those scenes.

          • Meneldur October 23, 2013, 1:22 PM

I heard some rumors of Gollum’s journey to Mordor and Aragorn and Gandalf’s meetings might be included in the third film, but Peter Jackson has denied it. But he also denied the second film having Tauriel and Legolas fall in love and from the second trailer that just came out, it looks like they actually do. Hmm…….
These Hobbit films are suppose to lead into the LOTR movies. Hopefully Mordor and Aragorn will appear in the final film.

      • ninja of stealth October 24, 2013, 12:23 PM

very interesting, thank you admin. also, none of these sets really grab my attention. but the ones they have out are better in my opinion.

        • admin October 24, 2013, 1:51 PM

I agree that the buildings are kind of lackluster. I’m only looking at the parts selection and also the minifigs. ๐Ÿ™‚

          • Meneldur son of Garamar October 24, 2013, 7:34 PM

Same here. They have some fun features but I was disappointed mostly though with Mirkwood Elf Army.

  • JediToa October 23, 2013, 12:48 PM

Will these sets be out by Christmas?

    • Meneldur October 23, 2013, 1:23 PM

Definitely. I got the Mirkwood Spiders set and the Riddles for the Ring set several weeks before Christmas.

  • Bohrok Tru October 23, 2013, 1:01 PM

the Dol Guldur is a must-have for me 0.0 it has so many useful things for me!! sooo coolllzz!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gabriel October 23, 2013, 1:39 PM

I can’t help but notice, especially with the Lake-town set, that the art on the new packaging really obscures how small these sets are. Not that I am complaining about their size, but it seems a little sneaky to have the background appear so integrated with the sets. Am I the only one who feels this way?

    • admin October 23, 2013, 2:04 PM

Gabriel, good notice! This is actually becoming an issue with all LEGO sets, and probably other products as well. As digital art becomes better and better, companies are using them to their full advantage; making their products appear bigger and brighter than they actually are.

Fortunately with LEGO, they also release images of the actual sets, which gives a better idea on what you actually going to get. Still, I’m often surprized by the smallness of sets once I get them after seeing all the big images on my computer screen. ๐Ÿ™„

This is one reason I really like the BrickShow’s video-reviews. When you see the sets in the hands of Jason you get a perspective and a better idea of what you get.

      • ShadowPixl November 10, 2013, 1:52 PM

Same here. There is also something to be said about the boxes. The boxes are often larger than normal, making the customer think they are larger than the actual. Like in the battle of the black gate, the set was well worth the money, and came with interesting new parts, but the box looked like it belonged to a huge 80 dollar set or something like that.

  • Brick addict October 23, 2013, 3:55 PM

Dang i want a smaug soooooooo bad COME ON LEGO GIVE ME ONE!!!

    • ShadowPixl November 10, 2013, 1:53 PM

I can’t tell you how much I want a smaug figure too, man! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • legostuff71 October 23, 2013, 6:10 PM

It seems like the sets are getting smaller and the prices are getting higher.

    • admin October 23, 2013, 8:35 PM

That may be just a perception as the price per piece haven’t changed for years; somewhere between 7-10 cents a piece. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • LloydTheRulerOfNinjago October 23, 2013, 7:57 PM

Admin, do u know the prices of the sets? Thanks

    • admin October 23, 2013, 8:43 PM

I have seen some prices floating around but they were not conclusory, nor did they match, so I think we better just wait until we get an official price-list from LEGO. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Ethyl October 23, 2013, 9:42 PM

I’m also a little disappointed with the smallness of the sets. I like the architecture of Lake Town and each set has interesting mini-figures, I just wish they had a bit more to the build. I think Dol Goldur Battle will be my must have, depending on the price.

    • admin October 24, 2013, 11:09 AM

Ethyl, I do remember reading somewhere that LEGO is very aware of the economy and are focusing on a greater variety of small to mid-size, affordable sets, while also releasing some limited edition large sets. But the focus is on the smaller sets. I’m sure they stufy their numbers carefully and know what sells best.

    these sets looks so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brick addict October 24, 2013, 10:52 AM

    i do love Elves ๐Ÿ˜€

    • admin October 24, 2013, 11:15 AM

Yeah, pointy eared elves rule! ๐Ÿ˜€

      • ShadowPixl November 10, 2013, 1:47 PM

(old Spock) hmph. Live long and prosper, my ears! XD

  • ShadowPixl November 10, 2013, 1:46 PM

Oh…my GOSH! These are awesome! Love the new elf army. I gotta add it to my collection of elves! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • The Dark Jedi November 13, 2013, 8:09 PM

Why buy Mirkwood Elf Army? Because elves. Those green hoods are good addition to the collection too…

  • Luke-Hammerhand November 26, 2013, 3:08 PM

These sets look really cool. They may not have the best buildings, but the minifies (especially the new orcs) all look really great.
Don’t know if this is the right place to ask this, but…. I’m looking to buy my next LOTR/hobbit lego set and I’m not sure what to get. Right now I have the Uruk-Hai Army and the Mines of Moria, and I want to get the older LOTR sets before they’re discontinued and the prices are hiked. The problem is I don’t know what one to get… Anybody have a suggestion?

    • admin November 26, 2013, 3:35 PM

Luke, I would suggest getting The Battle of Helm’s Deep. It is a nice set and also a very central part of the story. Another set I personally like is Orc Forge for all those brown pieces. One can never get enough brown! And it is also a nice set. Plus it includes those printed Orc helmets and armor pieces. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Luke-Hammerhand November 26, 2013, 6:18 PM

Hmm, the only thing is the price of Helm’s Deep. I would love it for the pieces though (I’m making a MOC of Helm’s Deep)… But then Lurtz and the white hand Uruks in the orc forge are awesome…
BTW, anybody seen the price of the Uruk-Hai army lately? The cheapest on Amazon is almost $50!

    • admin November 26, 2013, 8:33 PM

Luke, yeah, the price thing is always an issue. I would suggest that you look out for sales – especially on Black Friday when retailers are all trying to undercut each other. ๐Ÿ˜‰
