I know we have talked about the #21109 LEGO Ideas Exo Suit several times, and I have reviewed the set previously myself, but it is hard to shut up about this revolutionary set (see previous articles at the end of this post). Today I will share with you the time-lapse build of the set, as well as a full review by the BrickShow, talk about the availability of the set, plus a few other things I haven’t mentioned previously. ๐
As you know, the LEGO Exo Suit was released on August 1st at midnight EST. Availability at the Online LEGO Shop changed to “Out of stock, will ship on August 15th” almost immediately, as people flooded the website with orders. By mid-day on the 1st of August the status changed to “Out of stock, will ship in 30 days”. This has been a huge disappointment to LEGO fans who don’t live close to an official LEGO store. In addition, there is a limit of one set per household, so if you were dreaming of building an army of LEGO Exo Suits, you better just focus on trying to get one and consider yourself lucky.
I have called LEGO’s customer service and was told that the Online LEGO Shop will get a larger batch coming in on the 15th, however it seems like that was also sold out already with pre-orders, since the status was changed to shipping in 30 days. Mark Stafford (the LEGO designer who worked on the LEGO Exo Suit) mentioned that only one run of the set is planned, however with the demand, LEGO would be crazy not to make enough to last at least until the Christmas season.
Those who live close to an official LEGO store are more lucky. I have heard that stores are well-stocked with LEGO Exo Suits, however they also have a limit of 1 set per household. It is much easier to get around the limit though, as you can just come back the following day for another set, or ask a family member or friend to get you one. I hope that LEGO is going to respond to the demand and won’t be leaving LEGO fans disappointed, otherwise they will have a whole lot of grumpy customers to deal with. ๐
Now let’s check out some reviews! The first video is a full review by the BrickShow, so you can see from every angle the LEGO Exo Suit, the LEGO Classic Space minifigs in green, and the turtle. Please note that Jason assembled the cockpit area incorrectly, so it doesn’t exactly look right, the minifig doesn’t fit all the way in, and the roll-cage can’t close fully. I did send Jason a message mentioning this, and hopefully he will figure out where the mistake is. I have mentioned in a previous article that the LEGO Exo Suit is not an easy assembly. You do have to pay attention to the instructions and build it carefully. But the set and the building techniques will amaze you!
The second video – also by the BrickShow – isย the time-lapse build of the set. If you watch it carefully you can see some of the interesting building techniques used, and you could also probably figure out where Jason made the mistake when assembling the set.
There is also a very interesting article at the LEGO Ideas blog about the Making of the Exo Suit (yes, that’s the title, you can just click on the link to read it) and how Peter Reid and Mark Stafford worked together on theย design. It is really worth to read it. Also, although I have shared some modification on my own copy of the LEGO Exo Suit in a previous article, I have now done even more. You can check it out in my flickr gallery. Both Peter and Mark endorsed it, so I’m happy about that. ๐
As I have mentioned, the #21109 LEGO Ideas Exo Suit is available at the Online LEGO Shop, however it won’t ship for 30 days. Still, I would suggest that you put in your order as soon as possible because, although we fervently hope that LEGO will make a second batch, there is no guarantee in this regard. It is better to get one now andย wait for them to ship, thanย not being able to get the set at all. Here is the direct link: BUY LEGO EXO SUIT AT THE ONLINE LEGO SHOP
So what do you think? Is the LEGO Ideas Exo Suit a set you are hoping to get? Or did you get it already? How do you like it? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! ๐

It looks a lot cooler in person. I know there was that cumbersome shoulder greebling that supposedly keeps falling off. I was worried when i saw how loose the piece was, and searched through my spare parts to look for a replacement, but did not find one. However, even after intense play it has miraculously stayed on.
Also, in the end I made a flamethrower for my exo-suit. It has this cool looking tank on the back, and this weird cool tube piece that I’ve never seen before for the hose, and then this gun I slapped together to spray the fire.

No. It is based on the content/words used/links that the moderation software flags and wants me to check before approving. ๐
The issue with the shoulder piece is that LEGO used the wrong mould. There is a better version of the piece. It is possible that you got a set with a better version. I just inserted a 3L lightsaber-blade inside and it works just fine. And yes, a lot of people are building giant guns for the Exo Suit. I have seen several versions already, and yours sounds fun too! ๐
Oh no it’s definitely one from the old mold. If that t-shaped piece wasn’t there, like the one that connects the shoulder piece to the suit, the robot arms would fall off in a heartbeat. On the plus side while looking for a replacement piece (like the same piece but from the 1980s when the mold wasn’t busted), I uncovered a treasure trove of old minifigures such as a bunch of Classic Space guys, British soldiers from the old Pirate line, and an old wizard that has cape piece that isn’t fabric but solid plastic.
Yeah, finding all treasures is always fun! ๐
I still want this set so badly. Also, I think you’re right that LEGO should probably make a few waves of this set, or people will be upset.
I ordered that set and I’m waiting anxiously for it to get here
Admin could you put a few links of guns people built for the exo suit
Here is one with shoulder-cannons: https://www.flickr.com/photos/73759759@N02/14820346292/in/photostream/

Ah-ha! I knew that the two missing parts in the set inventory were 1×2-plate-w/-2×2-side-plates! I am regretting not getting this, though, as it now reads Temporarily out of stock, and no doubt it will say Sold Out on December 1st. ๐
And I’m confused. Admin, you say there will be a restock, but: http://brickset.com/article/11988/new-ideas-sets-availability . Who is right? ๐
I called LEGO. Twice. Both times they told me that the LEGO Ideas Research Institute will be restocked, and also the Exo Suit will be back. I specifically mentioned that the Research Institute shows sold out, but I was reassured that it will be back. So that’s what LEGO’s own representatives told me. I can’t say who is right or wrong, but I trust LEGO’s own employees more in this regard. ๐
Ok, ok. I do believe LEGO more than Brickset, since that’s more based on the UK. I hope it will be around long after this restock though. ๐
I’m doubtful about that. LEGO Ideas sets tend to sell out quickly. Even if they get restocked it is usually not for too long, and there so much demand for this set both by LEGO fans and resellers. If you would like to get it, I would suggest to buy one right after it gets back in stock (which – I was told – should be early September). If you are short on cash, get two and sell the second one for double the price and keep one for yourself. You would basically own it for free. You can’t loose by getting this set. ๐
Well, I’d rather get it in-store, which would be early December. And I can’t buy it online without help, plus I have no idea where I should have it shipped to. I don’t know my new house’s address. ๐ ๐
Also, how would I sell a second set, if I got two?
Maybe you are too young for reselling, so forget about that part. One thing you could do if you want to buy at the LEGO store, is that you tell them you want the set. You can pick it up or they will ship it to you when it becomes available. It is always a good idea to make friends with LEGO store employees and managers. They are very nice people and their friendship comes handy in situations like this. ๐
I think that lego should make a reboot of the classic space theme. That would be awesome! ๐
Wow, this is awesome! What are the strings? ๐
What strings? Are you talking about my modification? Those blue thingies are not strings, they are exposed wires, using the official LEGO blue rubber-bands. ๐
Personally, I never fully understood all the fuss about this set, but I’m beginning to. I don’t think I will get one though. Also, green is cool, but I think black space guys would contrast better with the light grey.
Woops, sorry, I wrote the above comment. Shared iphone and I didn’t realize lego trooper was logged in.
Green was used because LEGO never released a green Classic Space man and LEGO fans have been requesting one for a long time. I have they will bring back Classic Space in other ways too with more colors (both original and new ones). ๐
Okay, I was unaware that green had been requested. With that in mind, it was a fairly obvious choice as I don’t think a better outlet for new space guys is going to come around again in a while.
I think there is a possibility that we will see more Classic Space references. Maybe it won’t be a straigh-on bringing back Classic Space, but more like what we have seen with the Exo Suit and Benny’s Spaceship. Based on the great enthusiams for both sets there is definitely a demand.
Thank god it’s in Lego stores. This looks amazing.
Yeah, it is. If you are interested to get it, I suggest you do it soon, as it has been selling like hotcakes everywhere and many LEGO stores are already sold out. ๐
