LEGO FUSION – learn how to play! – part 2

Last week I shared with you a couple of excellent tutorials directly by the LEGO designer who was working on the LEGO FUSION sets. As you know, LEGO FUSION blends together building with real LEGO bricks and digital play on your smart-phone or tablet device, and it takes a bit to understand how these sets work and how revolutionary they are. There are four sets in the LEGO FUSION line, however at the time of writing the first article only two tutorials were available; for #21204 LEGO FUSION Town Master and #21205 LEGO FUSION Battle Towers (see here: LEGO FUSION – Learn How to Play!). But now we have the other two tutorials, thanks to Nichole from the LEGO FUSION team who reached out and made sure the missing videos were uploaded quickly. So let’s check them out! 🙂

LEGO FUSION CREATE & RACE – LEARN HOW TO PLAY: In this video you will get introduced to the LEGO FUSION Create & Race set. I was actually really looking forward to this video, because I knew this game was different than the previous two we talked about before. Here, instead of building a LEGO model with real LEGO bricks, then using the scanning-plate to upload them into the game, you build the car inside the digital game, which then generates building instructions so you can build your car with real LEGO bricks. Once you are done you use the scanning-plate to confirm that what you build is correct (This step is really funny with what looks like animated minifigs running around your desk giving a final inspection.)

I believe the process is done this way because in the other LEGO FUSION sets you build a 2D version of your design which is than scanned into and built 3D in the game. Vehicles would be hard to build 2D with real LEGO bricks, but if you would build then 3D it would be difficult (if not impossible) to scan them in – so the process has been reversed while still keeping the real-world and digital building interactive. The downside of this is that while in the other LEGO FUSION sets you must build with real LEGO bricks to populate your digital world, in the LEGO FUSION Create & Race game it seems that you can progress in the game just fine without ever building anything with real LEGO bricks. I could be wrong, and perhaps there are parts of the digital game that you can’t unlock without building something for real and getting enough points, but this is not clear from the tutorial. The digital racing games look really fun though and I guess kids will be compelled to play out at least some of the action with real LEGO racecars!

Here is the description of the #21206 LEGO FUSION Create & Race set for your convenience: Get behind the wheel of the virtual cars that you create with the digital designer, then build with real LEGO bricks! Compete on racetracks, stunt courses and in demolition challenges to dominate the leaderboard with your designs on your smart-phone or tablet! Take them to the track, then tune them up in the LEGO garage before each epic race for glory – where every brick matters! Watch as each element changes the stats of your creation. Build racecars, monster trucks and more with endless customization for maximum impact. 223 pieces. Price: $34.99 – BUY HERE

LEGO FUSION Create and Race

LEGO FUSION RESORT DESIGNER – LEARN HOW TO PLAY: This is another LEGO FUSION set that is a bit different and was specifically designed for girls (or those who like the LEGO Friends sets). Here you can build houses like in LEGO FUSION Town Master (build in 2D with real LEGO bricks, scan into the game, which will generate a 3D version), but here you can also decorate the interiors! Plus, there are some other interactive and fun things to do inside the game.

Here is the description of the #21208 LEGO FUSION Resort Designer set for your convenience: Help the LEGO Friends build a dream summer resort! Use real LEGO bricks to build houses, rooms, shops and cafés. Then, bring your designs to life in 3D on your tablet or smart-phone. Create houses, shops, restaurants, juice bars, surf shops, pet shops and everything your dream resort needs…the possibilities are virtually endless. Decorate the interior of your buildings any way you want! When you help Olivia to keep the Friends happy by building what they need, you’ll earn studs, accessories and unlock special features. Challenge yourself with missions and mini-games when they pop-up throughout the resort. Includes Olivia mini-doll. 263 pieces. Price: $34.99 – BUY HERE

Jonas, LEGO FUSION is a very new product that is still being tested with consumers. I’m pretty sure that if it becomes successful here they will open it up to a wider market. As far as the app, you could actually download it in other countries by just changing your country to the USA in the app store. 😉

For real? I will not loose other configurations when tampring with this country setting? I mean there is a reason for apple to build those walls! Thanks for answering!

        • admin October 1, 2014, 12:10 PM

Jonas, I’m not sure as I don’t have an Apple product. This was a tip given by one of our readers from Canada. He changed his country to the US, downloaded the app, then changed his country back to Canada. He did not mention loosing any settings, but if you want me to contact him to confirm I can. Here is what he said:

“Okay for Lego Fusion app to work for all you Canadians. Must go to the App Store. And scroll to the bottom and go into your I D. From there change region or country. You must select none for your payment method, which is fine as Lego Fusion is Free. Then pick a state and make up a 5 number zip code. Complete and then for into lego Fusion and download app. I then went back and made the changes back for my Canadian account. Thanks to my son , we worked together and made it work. Great game by the way!”

Oh, so is it a video game type thing? Am I the only one not getting this! 🙂 And why would they not make it in every country wouldn’t they make more money if they included it in every state? of would they make less because they would have to ship it over to that country? 😕 that just doesn’t make any sense. 😕

    • admin September 30, 2014, 1:19 PM

Just watch the videos. Everything gets clarified there. 😉

      • ninja of stealth October 1, 2014, 12:35 PM

        okay, I will. 😀

  • Kim September 30, 2014, 3:12 PM

OMG! Research Institute available now. Now I feel like an idiot for paying a re-seller price.

    • admin September 30, 2014, 3:18 PM

Hm… where do you see that? It shows up as “Call to check product availability” to me with the following note in the details: “We apologize, but this item is not currently available on shop.LEGO.com. Limited quantities may be available in October in LEGO Stores”. 😕

      • Kim September 30, 2014, 3:24 PM

Oh weird. I swear like 10 minutes ago it was in the “What’s New” section closer to the earlier pages in that group and said “available now” Maybe I’m on crakc.

        • Kim September 30, 2014, 3:24 PM

          *crack

        • admin September 30, 2014, 3:38 PM

It could have been just a glitch. Stuff like this happened to me too when browsing the shop. There are other weird things happening today. Every time I go to the shop it shows up that I’m in Austria. I have to manually change it to the USA. Then I leave the site, come back, and I’m back to Austria again. 😕

          • BLProductions September 30, 2014, 3:42 PM

Funny, that happened to me too a few days ago. I switched over to every country listed to check the Exo-suit availability, and when I went back to US and reloaded, I was in Great Britain. And it wouldn’t switch back no matter what I did. But it reset the next day. 😐

            • admin September 30, 2014, 3:44 PM

Yes, that sometimes happens after you switch countries. It probably has to do with cookies. But I almost never switch my country. The last time I did it was I think in January. 😕

              • BLProductions September 30, 2014, 4:29 PM

                Mmmm…..cookies. Tasty. 🙂

                • admin September 30, 2014, 4:32 PM

LOL! No these cookies are pretty boring and tasteless. 🙄

  • BLProductions September 30, 2014, 4:27 PM

Hm, Create & Race doesn’t seem as cool as I thought. That would still be the one I’d get though. I can’t get the app (nothing to put it on), but the set would still be great to get for the spare pieces: you can build your own cars that way. 🙂
BTW, I think the fact that you have to have a certain device to play the app on is a major fault. Not everyone will have those devices, and I doubt that most people are going to buy one just to get the app. But I suppose that doesn’t matter to LEGO, so as long as people but the sets. 😕

    • admin September 30, 2014, 4:31 PM

Yes, these sets are certainly not for everyone. I think that’s one of the reasons it hasn’t been released everywhere yet. You have to have either a tablet or smarphone. Since the digital game requires that your device has a camera and it is touchscreen, they did have to limit usage. I don’t think that is LEGO’s fault. If you would like to build race-cars, I suggest you wait until the Speed Champions sets get released next year. They are very sweet and the price per piece is so much better than on these.

      • BLProductions September 30, 2014, 5:58 PM

100% agreed. In fact I plan on getting the McLaren P1, and maybe the 918 Spyder. I’ve located many new pieces on these also, and can list them if you’d like.
Also, this literally just came up: http://brickset.com/article/12546/2015-ninjago-images Psych! I’m so exited!! 😀

        • admin September 30, 2014, 8:08 PM

Yeah, saw those too. Looks like lots of new characters! 😀

  • LegoFan January 1, 2015, 12:56 PM

So we have the fusion resort designer set. One problem, when we complete quests, for example, take pictures, build tables, and receive coins, the quests never clear, and the girls keep asking us to do the same thing over and over again? Are we missing something here? Kind of annoying.

    • admin January 1, 2015, 1:06 PM

Hm… that does sound annoying. I would call LEGO’s customer service about it. They should be able to direct you to the right person. It could be a bug in the app.
