Happy 2017! To start out the year with a bang, LEGO usually releases a very large number of new sets and themes on the 1st of January, and this year is no exception. So let’s dive right in and see what’s new for this year! 🙂
➡ JANUARY 2017 PROMOTIONAL SETS: There are two promotional sets this month. The LEGO Batman Movie Mini Batwing polybag is free with purchases of $35 or more until January 15th. And the LEGO Nexo Knights Kinghton Rider polybag is free with any LEGO Nexo Knights purchase from January 16th to the end of the month.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO CREATOR SETS: One of the most anticipated sets of the year is the new LEGO Creator Modular Building. The 2017 set is especially special, because it celebrates the 10th anniversary of the series. The #10255 LEGO Creator Assembly Square is substantially larger than the previous LEGO Modular Buildings, and it is full of references to the previous sets. It is a beautiful homage to the whole series. Another new LEGO Creator set is the #31065 LEGO Creator Park Street Townhouse, which is a 3-in-1 set in another series, often referred to the little brothers of the full size LEGO Modular Buildings. Other noteworthy 2017 LEGO Creator sets are the #31062 LEGO Robo Explorer, the #31063 LEGO Creator Beachside Vacation, and the #31064 LEGO Creator Island Adventures – all three of them are 3-in-1 sets with alternate designs. You can find all the new sets under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO CITY SETS: The first wave of the January 2017 sets were released at the beginning of December, and now we get the rest. This includes the #60081 LEGO City Pickup Tow Truck, the #60135 LEGO City ATV Arrest, the #60151 LEGO City Dragster Transporter, the #60138 LEGO City High-speed Chase, the #60139 LEGO City Mobile Command Center, the #60140 LEGO Cit Bulldozer Break-in, and the #60141 LEGO City Police Station. All of them are available under the LEGO City section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO NINJAGO SETS: LEGO Ninjago Season 7 should be airing sometimes soon, and based on the new trailer and the new sets, it is going to be very interesting. The new badguy minifigures are some of the best I have seen with samurai-type armor and beautiful weapons. And of course the ninja get new suits as well. There are seven new sets this time around, including the #70621 LEGO Ninjago The Vermillion Attack, the #70622 LEGO Ninjago Desert Lightning, the #70623 LEGO Ninjago Destiny’s Shadow, the #70624 LEGO Ninjago Vermillion Invader, the #70625 LEGO Ninjago Samurai VXL, the #70626 LEGO Ninjago Dawn of Iron Doom, and the #70627 LEGO Ninjago Dragon’s Forge. You can find them all under the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS SETS: LEGO Nexo Knights is going strong with some excellent and very unusual looking sets and minifigures. This time the largest sets are for the badguys, and in purple! The #70349 LEGO Nexo Knights Ruina’s Lock & Roller, the #70350 LEGO Nexo Knights The Three Brothers, the #70351 LEGO Nexo Knights Clay’s Falcon Fighter, and the #70352 LEGO Nexo Knights Jestro’s Headquarters are particularly noteworthy. Also, the new battle suit sets for the knights look great and are full of interesting pieces. You can find all the new sets under the LEGO Nexo Knights section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO BATMAN MOVIE SETS: The first wave of The LEGO Batman Movie sets were released in December, and now the rest of them are available as well. This includes the #70900 LEGO Batman Movie The Joker Balloon Escape, the #70802 LEGO Batman Movie Catwoman Catcycle Chase, the #70903 LEGO Batman Movie The Riddler Riddle Racer, the #70904 LEGO Batman Movie Clayface Splat Attack, the #70907 LEGO Batman Movie Killer Croc Tail-Gator, the #70908 LEGO Batman Movie The Scuttler, and the #70911 LEGO Batman Movie The Penguin Arctic Roller. You can find all of the new sets under The LEGO Batman Movie section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO SUPER HEROES SETS: The LEGO Marvel and LEGO DC Super Heroes lines get six new LEGO Super Heroes Mighty Micros sets – three for each theme. These small, $10 sets include two mini versions of superheroes as well as two mini vehicles. Really great pocket sets for collectors. You can find them under the LEGO Marvel and LEGO DC Super Heroes sections of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO DC SUPER HERO GIRLS SETS: Three of the sets in this new theme were released a month early, and now we get the rest of the sets. This includes the #41233 LEGO Super Hero Girls Lashina Tank, the #41234 LEGO Super Hero Girls Bumblebee Helicopter, and the #41235 LEGO Super Hero Girls Wonder Woman Dorm. All of them are under the LEGO Super Hero Girls section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO DISNEY SETS: The very popular Frozen movie gets two new sets; the #41147 LEGO Disney Anna’s Snow Adventure, and the #41148 LEGO Disney Elsa’s Magical Ice Palace. Also, while they were released a bit early, remember that the #41149 LEGO Disney Moana’s Island Adventure and the #41150 LEGO Disney Moana’s Ocean Voyage are also new 2017 sets. There are also a couple of new LEGO Disney Palace Pets sets; the #41143 LEGO Disney Berry’s Kitchen and #41144 LEGO Disney Petite’s Royal Stable. All of them are available under the LEGO Disney section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO FRIENDS SETS: Fifteen new LEGO Friends sets have been released. The largest ones include the #41312 LEGO Friends Heartlake Sports Center, the #41313 LEGO Friends Heartlake Summer Pool, and the #41314 LEGO Friends Stephanie’s House. Another really nice new LEGO Friends set is the #41311 LEGO Friends Heartlake Pizzeria. There are some noteworthy smaller sets also; the #41306 LEGO Friends’ Mia’s Beach Scooter includes the LEGO scooter in a new lavender color, the #41309 LEGO Friends Andrea’s Musical Duet features a new guitar, and there are also some small $5 sets with new puppies! You can find all the new sets under the LEGO Friends section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO ARCHITECTURE SETS: Three new LEGO Architecture sets are available this month in the LEGO Architecture Skyline Collection; the #21032 LEGO Architecture Sydney set, the #21033 LEGO Architecture Chicago set, and #21034 LEGO Architecture London set. All three are under the LEGO Architecture section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO IDEAS SET: The #21308 LEGO Ideas Adventure Time set was released a week early, but it is still considered a new set for 2017. Also, remember the #21306 LEGO Ideas Yellow Submarine, and the #21307 LEGO Ideas Caterham Seven 620R, which are some of the most recently released sets originally designed and submitted by LEGO fans. You can find them all under the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.
➡ JANUARY 2017 LEGO JUNIORS SETS: There are four new sets in the LEGO Juniors line. Even though they are for younger kids who are just transitioning over from LEGO DUPLO, they are noteworthy for older LEGO fans also because of the unique printed pieces. The four sets are the #10736 LEGO Juniors Anna & Elsa’s Frozen Playground, the #10737 LEGO Juniors Batman vs. Mr. Freeze, the #10146 LEGO Juniors Mia’s Farm Suitcase, and the #10747 LEGO Juniors Andrea & Stephanie’s Beach Holiday. You can find them all under the LEGO Juniors section of the Online LEGO Shop.
And that should conclude all the newly available sets for 2017 that were just released. However remember that there are other new 2017 sets that were released last month and we talked about already. If you want to see all the new sets in one place, you can find them under the New Items section of the Online LEGO Shop.
As you can see with all the new sets released, there is definitely something for everyone. My personal favorite is the #10255 LEGO Creator Assembly Square, which I will be reviewing soon. Some of my other favorites that I’m definitely planning to get are the #31062 LEGO Creator Robo Explorer with that really cool turquoise robot, and a few of the smaller LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Nexo Knights, and LEGO Friends sets (must get that lavender scooter and new guitar!). What about you? Which are your favorite sets this month that you are planning to get? Feel free to share your own list of must-haves in the comment section below! 😉

Okay, this is what I’m going to get. Maybe not at once because of money, but on my top wanted list. Assembly Square, of course, some of the smaller Nexo Knight and Ninjago sets, and I’m also looking at that Friend pizzeria. It looks really good. So I assume we will get Star Wars, Elves and Speed Champions later?
Yeah, it looks like we are going to get those sets later. My guess would be March, which is when we usually get another wave. I think you will be very happy with Assembly Square. It is an amazing set as is, and of course you can modify it too. Will publish my review on it in a couple of days. 🙂
Definitely going to try out those purple Nexo sets. Some of those minifigs look amazing! Ninjago also looks great and I plan to get at least some of the samurai armor pieces.
I was looking at that purple ghostly character from Nexo Knights too! The mould of the bottom part of his body is an amazing piece! 😀
These Nexo Knights sets seem quite inspired by Skeletor from the MOTU series…
I might ‘possibly’ buy the Robo Explorer, although I rarely buy new sets these days…
Oh, interesting! You are right!
It’s the Apollo rocket that I’m really waiting for. I wonder when that will hit the shelves.
Yeah, I’m really looking forward to that one too! The Apollo 11 Saturn V is scheduled for release in mid-2017, and the Old Fishing Store is scheduled for the Fall.
Sooo for USA the Marvel sets (not Mighty Micros) and the Lance Vs. Lightning set (nexo) coming out in the spring??
That would be my guess.
70359 Lance vs. Lightning is out now in the US: https://shop.lego.com/en-US/Lance-vs-lightning-70359
Aaron’s Stone Destroyer (70358) is also out. I think both are limited retail sets. The Marvel sets, though, are indeed to be released in March.
Ok thanks will get them for my b-day then!
My brother & I are about halfway through building Assembly Square. I love the new tiles. It’s a very fun build so far. It better be, though, for that price.
Was first in line at the LEGO Store yesterday. That might be the most crowded I’ve ever seen it.
Glad to hear that! I finished mine a few days ago and I’m already in the process of modifying it. I’m turning the café into a pizza place (as I already have a café). I also added more stuff to the music store (a great way to display the whole range of printed LEGO guitars!). Added the CMF ballerinas to the dance studio, and I will also be redoing the bakery and the apartment. Fun stuff! 😀
Ordered the assembly square first thing in the morning yesterday. That’s the #1 purchase priority. Can’t wait for its arrival. Planning on going to pickup some Batman CMF later today.
Nice! I think you will really like it. It is an excellent set in so many ways! 😀
Ah, a new year of LEGO. 🙂 Oddly, there’s not much I’m interested in from this wave. Nothing from the City, Creator, Disney, or Super Heroes that just came out, but the Batman Movie and Ninjago sets are great. I plan to get the Dragon’s Forge (70627) and at least one TLBM set. Nexo Knights is okay, although none are too interesting to me. I like the London skyline, and might get it to replace getting 10214 and 10253 (paying $40 instead of $490). But that’s about it. I still have plenty of 2016 sets to get…. 😕
What are “Technic Tuesdays”? Apparently there’s details on the back of the January calendar, but I can’t find any pictures of that side.
Also, LEGO.com/CS’s set inventories are glitched again. The random part now is a Duplo wash basin: http://brickset.com/parts/4622408 It seems to replace minifig parts in an inventory. Funny, but odd. 🙂 Speaking of inventories, it seems the Ninjago sets are introducing a new color, “Copper Metallic.” I wonder what the difference is (if any) to the old copper color.
Technic Tuesdays: “Here is your chance to build with Technic brick or race prebuilt vehicles against your friends or a Brick Specialist. Technic is a more advanced building experience and is recommended for ages 8+. Ask a Brick Specialist for details.” That’s all the back of the Calendar says.
Hm… copper metallic? That sounds really delicious! I love copper color pieces, especially the metallic ones! 😀
Hm, so Technic Tuesdays allow you to build Technic cars in-store and race them (probably down a ramp; first to the bottom wins). Sounds like one of the attractions at LEGOLand parks, except with only Technic. Not that exciting…. 😕 Thanks for the info.
Copper Metallic sounds delicious? Ok, if you say so…. 😀 Too bad LEGO only made two parts in that color, the Uruk-hai swords and the “Weapon No.1, 2013.” The most similar color of the old coppers is “Copper, Drum Lacquered” which was last seen in 2012. That was only used for helmets and an axe blade. Normal “Copper,” discontinued in 2008, extended to a few actual bricks. Based on this and the Titanium Metallic bricks also seen on 2017 Ninjago sets, I’d say there’s a chance we’ll actually get this new color on other parts that have more applications than just weapons… hopefully.
BTW, I just noticed that you didn’t mention the #40236 Valentine Picnic in the article, though it also became available yesterday.
I love copper parts – mostly because they are great for ancient looking weapons and also for steampunk. I didn’t mention the Valentine’s Day set, because I didn’t know it was going to be available on the 1st. But I will write about it this weekend, when I’m doing a round up on cheap and awesome sets. 🙂
I’m excited for the Ninjago and Friends sets. But I just wonder why LEGO didn’t add Olivia’s and Emma’s siblings when doing their homes (After all they did add the parents) either way I’m exited for a new friend house ..if I get it.
