Fun LEGO magazines with minifigs & more!

Last year, LEGO Kids Special Editions released three awesome magazines for LEGO City, LEGO Friends, and LEGO Ninjago fans. The magazines are similar to the LEGO Club (now LEGO Life) magazines with tons of puzzles, games, posters, and comics that kids can enjoy. A unique feature of these magazines is that they also include a minifigure with accessories in a foil packet attached to the front. Today, a new magazine was added to the collection, this time focusing on The LEGO Movie 2. Below, you can find more information about the new publication, and I also included info about the previous magazines for your reference. 🙂

THE LEGO MOVIE 2 MAGAZINE: The adventure continues! In The LEGO 2 Movie (releasing on February 8th, 2019 and featuring Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Charlie Day, and Will Arnett) magazine, young readers meet the famous heroes of the first movie – such as Emmet, Batman, and Lucy. Three funny comics, two cool posters, and exciting puzzles await the fans of the old and new characters. Comes with an Emmet minifigure with construction tools.

LEGO CITY MAGAZINE: LEGO presents the official LEGO City Activity Guide! Featuring tons of puzzles, games, comics, a double-sided poster, and an exclusive toy. This guide is sure to be a favorite of LEGO City fans everywhere! Comes with a policeman minifigure riding a small ATV.

LEGO FRIENDS MAGAZINE: Join the five LEGO Friends – Emma, Olivia, Stephanie, Andrea and Mia – on a magical adventure in Heartlake City in this fun-filled magazine! Filled with games, activities, comics, an awesome double-sided poster, and an exclusive toy, this magazine is a must-have for any LEGO Friends fanatic! Comes with two cute LEGO Friends bunnies, and a buildable slide and seesaw.

LEGO NINJAGO MAGAZINE: LEGO presents the official LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu Activity Guide! Featuring tons of puzzles, games, comics, a double-sided poster, and a free toy. This guide is sure to be a favorite of Ninjago fans everywhere. Comes with a Lloyd minifigure with golden sword and a removable ninja hood.

All four of the magazines released so far are standard magazine size, with thick and shiny covers. The full-color pages have nice quality printing. Speaking of printing, these magazines are printed on strong paper, not the thin magazine pages we are normally accustomed to. This makes them a lot more suitable for children, as the pages don’t tear easily. In addition, the matte finish prevents ink from smearing, and makes it easier to work on the included puzzles and games. Each magazine issue is 35 pages long, and includes comics, puzzles, games, and a removable double-sized poster (the posters are stapled to the middle of the magazine, so they need to be removed carefully to minimize damage). The minifig and/or accessories are in a foil packet attached to the front cover of the magazine, similar (but somewhat larger) than the packets for the LEGO Collectible Minifigures.

The LEGO Movie 2 magazine was released today, January 22nd, and should be available at newsstands nationwide. If for some reason you can’t find it, or you are looking for the earlier magazines, you can get all four of them online at OnNewsStandsNow.com (link will take you directly to the magazines’ page). The magazine issues are $10.99 each, which is not cheap, but considering that the packets are worth about $4, it’s not so bad. Keep in mind that if you are ordering online, there are shipping charges involved. Finding the magazines locally is your best option.

If you already got any of the magazines, feel free to share your thoughts and own reviews in the comment section below! 😉

Will these be released in the USA? My impression is that most of these magazines only have been released in Europe so far, and the City magazine that actually was released in the US was deterringly expensive…

The link to buy them is in the article. That’s a US website. So, I assume yes. But I don’t know about their availability at magazine racks. Admin, can you confirm?

      • admin January 22, 2019, 2:42 PM

Yes, they are available in the US, including at newsstands. I have been in touch with the publisher directly. However, when and which newsstands will carry them will likely depend on the location. They are technically released today, but I remember that when they released the Newsweek special edition magazine focusing on LEGO (which was also published by them), it took several weeks until I found it locally.

Yes, they are available in the US. They are published by Media Lab Publishing, which is a New York based company publishing all kinds of fan magazines and special edition magazines. I included the link to their website in the article above. 🙂

Chima, Nexo Knights, and Elves had magazines too. I was getting them off eBay initially, but then I found http://www.newsstand.co.uk

There’s a lot of kids magazines in Britain that always come with little toy trinkets, apparently.

Since Lego Movie 2 has a fairly small time window of promotion, probably there will be only two or three issues for it.

    • admin January 22, 2019, 2:44 PM

Yes, that’s where you can get the magazines if you are in the UK. If you are in the US, you can get them at https://onnewsstandsnow.com/

      • Ray January 23, 2019, 1:23 PM

OK. I had no idea there were USA editions of these or a USA source. Or maybe that’s a recent development. The publisher that does them in the UK is http://www.immediate.co.uk/ Maybe Media Lab Publishing is licensing these from Immediate Media for North American publishing.

http://www.newsstand.co.uk ships UK magazines to all over the world. Even with the bag of lego parts attached, they always made it to me OK, coming across the Atlantic Ocean.

        • admin January 23, 2019, 2:20 PM

I don’t know when they became available in the UK, but the first three magazines became available in the US at the end of last July. I was contacted by the publisher and they send review copies of each issue, as well as a press-release. The press-release included the following info about Topix Media Lab/Media Lab Publication:

Topix Media Lab is a growing magazine and book publishing house in New York City creating more than 100 high-end bookazines and trade books per year. The company’s expanding list of brand partners includes Disney, Newsweek, World Wrestling Entertainment, Jack Hanna, Discovery Channel, Investigation Discovery, CBS Networks, John Wayne, Adult Coloring Books and much more. For more information, visit topixmedialab.com or OnNewsstandsNow.com.

Publishers often have collaborations that can sound quite complex and confusing, so I’m not sure what’s the relationship between the UK and US versions.

OK. I had no idea there were USA editions of these or a USA source. Or maybe that’s a recent development. The publisher that does them in the UK is Immediate Media. Not sure if they produce the content or just do the printing. Maybe Media Lab Publishing is getting the stuff from the same source.

It’s generally some comics and simple games like mazes and stuff.

The Newsstand site ships UK magazines to all over the world. Even with the bag of Lego parts attached, they always made it to me OK, coming across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kids magazines shipped with toy trinkets, yeah. That’s all over Europe. Quite a nuisance. Are you spared from them in the US?

      • admin January 22, 2019, 9:35 PM

Oh, that’s interesting. I don’t think they are very common here. At least I have never seen any besides these LEGO magazines. I imagine they are kind of hard to ship.

        • Håkan January 22, 2019, 9:51 PM

I’d have figured they could be packaged in Mexico to be distributed in the USA and Canada or something, but not that either, apparently…

          • admin January 22, 2019, 10:32 PM

I just looked through the fine print at the back of the magazines. It says that the magazines are printed in the USA. They are produced under license from the LEGO Group. The little packets state that the contents are made in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, Chine and the Czech Republic. Which is the usual language on most LEGO sets.

            • Håkan January 23, 2019, 7:49 AM

I referred to trinket magazines, in general…

              • admin January 23, 2019, 2:04 PM

Oh, I see. Yeah, we don’t really have those here. They call these types of mailings “lumpy mail” here, but they are expensive to ship. 😀

  • SPMom January 22, 2019, 2:20 PM

We got the earlier ones. Ordered them at the website admin mentioned. They keep the kids occupied on long road trips. 😀

  • sammy January 22, 2019, 2:33 PM

So these are like the Lego Club magazines, but cost money and include a minifig? Are they released regularly, or they only have occasional issues?

    • admin January 22, 2019, 2:46 PM

These are not regular magazines, but special edition issues focusing on a particular LEGO theme. And yes, they are quite similar to the LEGO Club/LEGO Life Magazines in the sense that they have games, puzzles, comics, etc. The artwork is similar too. But while the LEGO Club/LEGO Life Magazines cover several current LEGO themes, these magazines only focus on one theme per issue.

    • Ray January 23, 2019, 1:26 PM

For the UK ones at least, most of them are monthly-ish. Each issue is dated to be on the stands for about a month and a half. That’s for the popular ones. Elves only got two per year.

  • Legostuff14 January 22, 2019, 6:46 PM

Sorry, off topic. Would it be too crazy of an idea to have benny’ s space crew fly the Jr. Star wars sets? Just so I can have star wars in the mix of the Lego and the Lego 2 movie theme. Yes , the bad guys will fly the tie fighter .

    • admin January 22, 2019, 9:38 PM

You mean those new, midi-size Star Wars sets? That sounds like a fun idea! Maybe color code them for Benny’s crew by adding a little blue. 😀

  • Legostuff14 January 22, 2019, 10:00 PM

Or maybe have a little bit of the matching color like the pilot that’s flying it. ( not a complete color of the pitol just a small piece .) Even if I use the white colored uniformed pilot I won’t have to change a thing.

    • admin January 22, 2019, 10:32 PM

That’s a great idea too! I want to see a little spaceship with pink details! 😀

  • Legostuff14 January 22, 2019, 10:05 PM

Benny already have his spaceship, spaceship, spaceship! Lol!😁

  • Dante November 11, 2021, 9:04 PM

Please can you add cool new awesome robot ninjas to the Ninjas collection. I would like to suggest to name it as ” MECHA”.
The element it can control is water and earth. Also a cool weapon called death Saber.

I also have attached my creation using some of my Ninjago characters.

I enjoyed reading the NINJAGO magazine. I like it because it has cool quizzes and also the best thing is I can create a cool golden ninja.

    are these magazines every month?

    • Thita (admin) September 30, 2023, 12:41 AM

Heather, these were special magazines, not a regular or monthly publication. Hope this helps. 🙂
