LEGO promotion options & Double VIP Points

We have already talked about the newly released 2019 sets (see: January 2019 – New LEGO Sets & Promotions), but there are a couple of promotional items and special deals I wanted to bring to your attention. 🙂

As we discussed at the beginning of the month, the LEGO Store Calendar now only features the various in-store events, and does not talk about the monthly specials. In addition, the LEGO Store Calendar is no longer available online ahead of time, so it has become difficult to plan ahead. In summary, we can no longer rely on the LEGO Store Calendar for planning our purchases, and have to pay more attention to the front page and monthly specials page of the Online LEGO Shop.

Something else that also changed this year is that freebies are no longer added to your order automatically. You have to go to the Offers and Promotions page at the Online LEGO Shop to see what’s currently available, and grab one of the promo codes that you will have to manually enter at the checkout page. It’s easy to forget to check on the promos, and having to manually enter the code also makes shopping more tedious.

On the plus side, now we can choose between two different promotions. This month, LEGO is offering a free set with purchases over $25, and you can pick either a LEGO City or a LEGO Friends set. The LEGO City Fire ATV features an all-terrain firefighter vehicle with blue siren bubble light, plus a firefighter minifigure with helmet, axe and a fire extinguisher. The LEGO Friends Club House Pod features a Stephanie mini-doll figure with exclusive outfit, a hamster, plus a piece of mission equipment for each of the five friends. At checkout, enter code ATV1 for the City Fire ATV or POD1 for Friends Club House Pod at the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO also changed how they handle Double VIP Points promotions. Instead of offering Double VIP Points on all sets for a short period of time, now they offer two sets each month with Double VIP Points. During the entire month of January, you can get the #41369 LEGO Friends Mia’s House and the #42094 LEGO Technic Tracked Loader with Double VIP Points. Both of these sets are new releases, so it’s great to get double points on them. You can find them at the LEGO Friends and LEGO Technic section of the Online LEGO Shop.

We talked about this previously, but for the sake of completeness, I will mention it again: There is a really nice promotion for LEGO VIP members who purchase The LEGO Movie 2 sets! You will get two cinema tickets to The LEGO Movie 2 if you spend $60 or more on The LEGO Movie 2 sets. After your purchase, you have 21 days to go to VIPExclusiveOffer.com, upload your physical or digital receipt, and receive your free movie tickets.

LEGO SETS ON CLEARANCE SALE: While LEGO is promoting the new 2019 sets, they are also clearing out some old stock. Close to a hundred really nice sets are on sale, including LEGO BrickHeadz, LEGO City, LEGO Classic, LEGO Creator, LEGO Elves, LEGO Friends, LEGO Minecraft, LEGO Nexo Knights, LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Speed Champions, LEGO Super Heroes, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Technic, plus a whole bunch of accessories like keychains, watches, stationery, and more. You can find them all under the SALE tab at the Online LEGO Shop.

For a full list of all the new 2019 sets, see the January 2019 – New LEGO Sets & Promotions. There is a large selection of fantastic sets from a wide variety of themes, including LEGO City, LEGO Creator, LEGO Friends, LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Technic and more.

What do you think? How do you like the 2019 LEGO sets so far? Did you get any of them already? And what do you think of the way LEGO is now handling promotions? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

The other day I bought the Monastery of Spinjitzu. So, far from the 2019 ninjago theme I have the ultra dragon and the monastery of spinjitzu. My next set ( to buy ) is Cole’s earth driller because it has the stone army. That big one looks so cool. Oh , I also got the Oni Army pack at the Lego store. I’m work on getting all of the new ninjago sets. I missed out on a lot of the earlier sets so I’m playing catch up. I’ve seen glimpses of the season 10 of ninjago ( the Oni Army is a clue) I just don’t know when it airs on tv.

The Ninjago LEGO sets are actually a really good way to catch up. No need to bother hunting down the old sets. I’m not sure when the next season will start airing, but this has been kind of mysterious every year (and varies by region).

Although I never have bought anything from the Lego site, this seems like a change for the worse. The VIP Points are reduced, even though the sets are often found cheaper elsewhere, and the additional gifts aren’t added automatically but needs to be added by hand by the user.

(The Cinema Tickets Drive also appears needlessly complicated…)

Yeah, none of this is good news. I’m not sure why they decided to make all these unfavorable changes. If enough LEGO fans complain they might reconsider. At least that’s my hope. 😐

This really makes shopping match harder. I liked when I could prepare ahead of time when to shop for what. Not knowing what are the promotions and when are the double vip points really make things difficult. Would Lego apply the specials if you order a day too early?

I have heard situations when LEGO fans got a promo item after they already made the purchase. But this wasn’t a common occurrence. And I agree, that all of these changes make planning a lot more challenging.

OK, so why is Lego doing this? What’s the point? They are only going to alienate their customers. People are going to turn to Amazon if there is no point in shopping from Lego directly and we never know what the promotions are. I hope this is just a January thing and things will get better for the rest of the year.

Martin, it’s possible that they are just doing this temporarily. Perhaps they are testing something. I’m not sure. But yeah, it’s kind of awkward and makes shopping and planning more difficult. In any case, I will keep you guys updated on any new promotions when they are announced. It’s not the best thing, but the second best we can do at this point. 🙂

The reason they have stopped announcing double points ahead of time is simple – lots of people save up and shop only during those times. They are hoping to downplay the effect of double points by not announcing in advance.
The only way to combat this is to just not buy anything and save your pennies until the next store-wide double points time, then stock up on everything you want.
It really isn’t that difficult, it just means waiting. They are hoping to capitalize on people that cannot wait.
I am sure they will continue to have 2-3 double points offers per year, not to mention the typical special days like Brick Friday and May the 4th.
