New LEGO sets at the 2019 toy fairs

January-February is always exciting for LEGO fans because of all the new sets released at the beginning of the year, and also because of the toy fairs. During these events, the LEGO Group and other toy manufacturers reveal some of their upcoming products that will be available later in the year. So, let’s take a look at what we know so far from the toy fair events. 🙂

2019 LONDON TOY FAIR: The London Toy Fair took place January 22-24. LEGO only revealed one new set during this event, the massive #70839 LEGO Movie 2 The Rexcelsior! The 1,820 piece model, released in summer 2019, gives builders of all ages the chance to take control of all-action hero Dangervest’s vessel, shaped like a fist and featuring a rapid-fire, 6-missile spring-loaded shooter with shooting function and a trigger in the back, allowing them to role-play space missions with Rex, Emmet and Rex’s raptor crew. Measuring over 7” (19cm) high, 15” (40cm) long and 8” (21cm) wide, The Rexcelsior features a detailed micro-scale interior, as well as Stubble Trouble Emmet and Rex Dangervest minifigures, Emmet and Rex LEGO micro-figures, five micro raptor dinosaur figures, and five micro build models including Emmet’s house and a dropship. I really like this set. It goes well with the already available #70826 LEGO Movie 2 Rex’s Rex-treme Offroader and the #70835 LEGO Movie 2 Rex’s Rexplorer! You can build a whole fleet with these sets! To see all the currently available sets, visit The LEGO Movie 2 section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The only other items LEGO revealed during the London Toy Fair were some accessories related to The LEGO Movie 2, like keychains, lights, storage solutions, display cases, backpacks, lunchboxes, stationary items, and more.

2019 GERMAN TOY FAIR: The German Toy fair took place in Nuremberg, Germany, between January 30th and February 3rd. Here, LEGO revealed a lot more about upcoming sets and themes, although taking pictures was not allowed. German LEGO fans Andres and Matthias from Zusammengebaut participated at the toy fair and reported on what was on display.

There are a couple of new LEGO Architecture sets coming, the #21045 LEGO Architecture Trafalgar Square and the #21046 LEGO Architecture Empire State Building.

There are two new LEGO Overwatch sets coming, the #75866 LEGO Overwatch set, and the #75867 LEGO Overwatch sets. Exact names are not yet known. For the currently available sets, check the LEGO Overwatch section of the Online LEGO Shop.

There are some really interesting sets in the LEGO Technic line. The #42096 LEGO Technic Car Transporter is a large set with 2,493 pieces, the #42097 LEGO Technic Spider Crane comes with 920 pieces, and the #42099 LEGO Technic Extreme Off-Road Vehicle comes with 958 pieces, three motors and independent suspension for each wheel. The biggest set is the #42100 LEGO Technic Liebherr 9800 excavator with 4,108 pieces, seven motors, and a new electronic system called CONTROL+. Watch the video preview below for more details.

There is also a new wave of sets related to The LEGO Movie 2, including the #70839 LEGO Movie 2 The Rexcelsior! we talked about above, and a handful of smaller sets.

2019 NOW YORK TOY FAIR: The New York Toy Fair will take place February 16-19. Usually, at this event the same sets are displayed as at the German Toy Fair, and some of them can be photographed as well. So, if you are curious about any of the sets mentioned above, look out for updates from this event.

Besides the above mentioned new sets, there are going to be other ones as well. For example, the new LEGO Harry Potter sets were not mentioned, and we already know that there are going to be new sets released for the Toy Story 4 film. And, if you are interested in any of the new sets released at the beginning of the year, check the NEW section of the Online LEGO Shop.

I most want to see the star wars sets. Will they be on display?

    • admin February 5, 2019, 1:54 PM

Hm… usually new Star Wars sets are revealed around April/May, but you never know. 🙂

Is Lego Elves canceled or shelved or something.. It was my families Grail Favourite.

    • admin February 5, 2019, 1:55 PM

Laurie, yes, my understanding is that Elves is now over. I know many LEGO fans are very sad about this. I do hope that something equally awesome will replace it, but no word yet.

      • FrenchToast February 5, 2019, 4:27 PM

I’m really sad to hear this. It was also one of our favorite themes.

        • Icepacklady February 6, 2019, 9:06 AM

Sad in our house also. We’re not much into the Princess themed sets and Elves really helped mix things up a bit with the Mini dolls. Lots of cool hair pieces and colors in those sets.

I like the Rex spaceship thing. It’s so rad! It’s like a human size Lego infinity gauntlet. I bet kids are going to love it (and smash it). I hope pictures and videos will be allowed at the New York toy fair!

    • admin February 5, 2019, 1:55 PM

Usually at least some pictures and videos are allowed at the New York Toy Fair, although licensed products are often off limit.

Is that new Control+ system is going to work with PF1 or PF2 or Boost? I’m so confused by all these different electronic options.

    • admin February 5, 2019, 1:58 PM

The LEGO Power Functions/Robotics system is going through a major transition right now, so it is probably going to be confusing for a few years. Even some new sets are still shipping with the first version of Power Functions, others ship with Powered UP, and then there is also BOOST, and Mindstorms, and now CONTROL+. I would suggest waiting a bit until the dust settles to see which of these systems survive.

      • Martin February 5, 2019, 2:08 PM

Yes, I wouldn’t sink any major money into the new systems until they are proven. The original Power Functions is a solid system, doesn’t require an app to operate, and we already know its kinks. Watching Sariel’s videos it seems like Powered Up has some issues with battery usage, distance, Bluetooth hangups. And Boost has similar problems plus issues with the color sensor.

I’m so excited about the new city sets . Space stuff, space stuff ,space stuff! I need to expand Benny’s space crew. As for ninjago , I’m up to my eyeballs with ninjago sets ( from the beginning of this year sets ) of course that’s not going to stop me.lol ! In fact I’m working on the Monastery of Spinjitzu and I have dragons everywhere. I have at least 4 more sets to go to complete this wave.

    • Håkan February 5, 2019, 8:27 PM

Many people are hoping that the City Space sets would be compatible with Benny’s Neo-Classic Space theme, although I think that unlikely.

(Even if I guess that new helmet mold should be put to better use than just a single set…)

      • admin February 5, 2019, 8:52 PM

I was wondering about those new helmet moulds. They are not really practical as actual space helmets though as they don’t have a visor. They are really only great for Classic Space, which of course means that now LEGO has to bring back Classic Space. There is no way around it. 😀

        • Håkan February 6, 2019, 6:49 AM

I’m more into Futuron and Blacktron, but if there’ll be further new minifig colors, I might consider it.

          • Håkan February 6, 2019, 6:57 AM

The Old Helmet had those Old Castle Visors, I remember, but modern visors tend to look rather weird.

  • Maya February 5, 2019, 3:51 PM

I wonder, is the new 3-in-1 Townhouse/Pet Store going to be simply a smaller version of the expert creator Petshop set?

    • brickmaster February 5, 2019, 4:28 PM

I think it might be like the creator bike shop and cafe and the other similar sets. I remember admin calling them the little brothers of the modulars, and they could be made into larger modular sets.

      • OhioBricker February 6, 2019, 11:07 AM

Just seems weird since there was a Creator 3-in-1 Townhouse just a couple years ago.

  • Håkan February 5, 2019, 8:32 PM

There were some rumors that the May CMF series would be a Disney series, IIRC.

    • admin February 5, 2019, 8:56 PM

Hm… that would be interesting. I do remember rumors that another series was coming.

  • Legostuff14 February 5, 2019, 11:05 PM

Of course if Lego is already doing a space theme then chances are that it won’t be for a while that lego does a classic space theme ( maybe next year. One can hope). Unless, the space theme that’s coming out is an up date version of the classic space theme. 👨‍🚀🤞

  • Icepacklady February 6, 2019, 9:11 AM

I’m happy about the Creator Carousel and the pet store. I see some good Friends sets in the midst too. I’ll keep an eye on the Overwatch sets. I’m burned out on Batman still so it will take a lot to pull me into those sets. I also need some of those City sets because who doesn’t want doughnuts??? “Been There, Donut” that but need more.

  • sammy February 6, 2019, 9:27 AM

I wonder if they are going to use those new action elements in the new city sets. I’m looking forward to city space, but I’m afraid it is going to be boring and expensive like the last time around.
