More LEGO Freebies, Specials & Promotions!

There are several interesting updates from the Online LEGO Shop that I wanted to make sure you’re aware of. You can read all about the new offers and promotions below.

LEGO SETS WITH DOUBLE VIP POINTS: First of all, there are two sets this month offered with Double VIP Points: The #70421 LEGO Hidden Side El Fuego’s Stunt Truck, and the #60225 LEGO City Rover Testing Drive. Both of these are a bit older sets, but if you’re interested in them, this is a good time to pick them up.

2017 LEGO COMIC-CON MINIFIG SWEEPSTAKES: Until June 21st, you can enter the LEGO VIP Monthly Sweepstakes for a chance to win the super rare Deadpool Duck minifigure. Redeem 50 points to enter (maximum 15 entries per VIP member allowed). Many will enter, only one will win! This minifig goes for around $300 on the secondary market, so it’s pretty special. You can enter the sweepstakes at the LEGO VIP site.

FREE LEGO HOT ROD WITH PURCHASE: We talked about this offer at the beginning of the month, but I wanted to add it here for the sake of completeness, and because this little set is so cool! The #40409 LEGO Creator Hot Rod is free with purchases of $85 or more until June 21st. This is a fantastic minifig-scale replica of the #5541 LEGO Model Team Blue Fury from 1995. I just built mine a couple of days ago, and I like it even better in person. It’s six-studs wide, so fits well with the LEGO Modular Buildings or with any LEGO City setup. This offer is valid on all purchases at the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO POLYBAGS AVAILABLE: LEGO polybag sets used to be sold or given away as freebies at official LEGO stores and at various LEGO retailers. However, under the current difficult and uncertain circumstances, LEGO decided to add them to the Online LEGO Shop, so people can get them easily. As they are in several different themes, it’s not possible to find them in one place, but you can go to “Shop by Price”, select “Under $25”, then sort the results by “Low to High”. All the polybag sets are $3.99, so you should be able to spot them. There are some cool ones and rare ones that used to be retailer exclusives and sought after by collectors. So check them out!

I know many sets in the U.S. are shown as backordered or out of stock, but this is because the LEGO factory in Mexico is still closed and LEGO has to reroute some sets for us from the factories in Europe and China. If you do see a set you like that shows as backordered, you can still purchase it, but there may be a bit of delay. I encourage you to place an order anyway. This is what I have been doing myself, and waiting an extra week or two is not too bad. LEGO is doing their best, but there is a lot going on in the world right now that’s out of control. So please be patient, keep building, and keep supporting the brand.

As a note, if you can make your way to one polybag (say, Disco Batman Tears of Batman), under the “Add to Bag” button there are a couple tags. One of these is the polybag tag, which you can click to view all the polybags in one place.

Thanks for this! I’m a collector and would love to get as many as possible!

Wow. Cool they are selling those polybags! I may pick up some. I’m not so much of a collector, but some of those are great for parts.

Does anyone have the city space sets? I’m kind of interested in those.

I recently finished building the entire line. Among all the sets the best one I feel is the Deep Space Rocket and Launch Control.

Overall, the series is solid if not a bit simple to build. It’s nice to see they got help from NASA for some of the designs of the set.

Wow! Can’t wait for the new sets to come out.( Harry potter, 3 in 1 creator and Super Heroes). But, with the Harry potter sets I’m a little conflicted because some sets i already have like the burrow attack set and part of me says get the new one don’t worry about the old one or work on the old one to make it look like the newer one. As for the astronomy tower set from Hogwarts, the only thing I like about it is the greenhouse on the side. I figure just get the sets i don’t have. So, i dont know? Any thoughts? I know the decision is mine to make but I like some ideas if you would share them. That would be greatly appreciate .

I’d say get the new ones you don’t have first, especially for the new molds.

Then for the ones you already have or just like a part of, keep an eye out on Bricklink. Some sellers will put up incomplete sets that may contain just the parts you like. Or they’ll give you the right pieces to help build up what you already have at a fraction of the price.

When I see sets I like partially, I make an evaluation. If I mostly like the set (say, around 75% and above), and I think the parts would be useful for my own creations, I will purchase it (if it fits my budget). If I like it less than %75 (for example, I only like a specific section of it), but I think the parts are especially useful, I may still get it for my own MOCs. If there are some parts of the set that I like, but I don’t care for the whole set and I don’t need the parts, I will just download the instructions and build the section I like from the parts I already have.

I always carefully look through all the pictures of new sets even if I don’t intend to purchase them. There may be some section of clever design I haven’t though of before that could be useful for my own builds. It could be something as simple as an interesting design for a mailbox, dumpster, or ATM, or a full kitchen layout, a cool vehicle, etc.

I have also been paying more attention to colors and color combinations LEGO designers use and learn from their examples. During the first season of the U.S version of LEGO Master Builders, LEGO designers Amy and Jamie, greatly emphasized the use colors. Most of us tend to stick to colors and color combinations we already like and have used in the past. However, it’s worth exploring new options, especially with all the new colors LEGO recently added. You can greatly change the mood of a MOC by just changing some of the colors. And even a simple MOC can look quite sophisticated when the right colors are chosen.

Anyway, those are some of my thoughts. Others can chime in if they like. 🙂

Thanks for the input I’ve decided to get the sets I don’t have first ( privet drive and the Forbidden Forest set ( I love centaurs). As well as the room of requirement. It’s just a $20 set but still cool. I’ve also discovered that the astronomy Tower the color scheme is both sand green and dark gray. So this means I can combine my old Hogwarts set with a new Hogwarts set and it wouldn’t matter. The older attack of the burrow set is still a fun looking set. ( I took a look at it to assess the situation and what I could possibly do with it or not ) its fine the way it is. The other curious question i have is do you think it would work to combine the Diagon Alley sets with modular building sets? Just to give it more of a city look maybe?

    • Thita (admin) June 7, 2020, 6:12 PM

I would really like to see a Diagon Alley Modular! It’s a nice color-combo and great design. I actually just looked it up, and it seems like other people have been also playing with the idea. 🙂

    • The Other Mark June 7, 2020, 6:26 PM

Another color I would like to have added to the modulars is dark tan. Did you guys notice that none of hte buildings use this color? It’s weird because it’s a common brick color.

      • Undercover Afol June 7, 2020, 9:09 PM

You can turn the Sanctum Sanctorum into a modular. It’s fairly easy, and half of it is dark tan.

        • Håkan June 8, 2020, 7:07 AM

Hmm, Sanctum Sanctorum’s retired now, apparently. Otherwise, I kinda like the idea of Marvel buildings. (Although I need to set up more shelves and cull some more in my other collections before I could get around to have space for any…)

    • Håkan June 8, 2020, 6:47 AM

I might try to get hold of a centaur part separately. I’m a bit partial, since I’m a sagittarius. Pop culture astrology…

Unfortunately those polys don’t show up in S@H in Europe, at least not in the Netherlands.
