LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 Coming Soon!

Today, the LEGO Group revealed a new product for the ultimate Star Wars fan collection: the #75308 LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 construction set, launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lucasfilm. Below are the details.

The galaxy’s most lovable droid can now be recreated in stunning detail with this 2,314 piece set, the most feature-packed LEGO brick version of R2-D2 from the LEGO Group to date. Adult LEGO builders and Star Wars fans alike can recreate their favorite moments from the films as they craft R2-D2’s unique retractable mid-leg, rotating head and a periscope. The model also has hidden tools tucked away, such as a lightsaber hilt hidden in a secret compartment in the head. Overall measurements: 12.5 in. (31 cm) high, 7.5 in. (20 cm) wide and 6 in. (15 cm) deep.

This set is perfect for any hero looking for a fun and immersive building experience. When finished, the R2-D2 replica makes an impressive focal point when displayed with the set’s exclusive minifigure version of the iconic droid and a special Lucasfilm 50th anniversary LEGO brick.

In 2021, Lucasfilm is celebrating half a century of storytelling with a range of commemorative, fan-favorite 50th anniversary Star Wars products, including this new LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 model.

Commenting on the new set, Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Creative Lead of LEGO Star Wars at the LEGO Group said:

“We have had the pleasure of creating hundreds of Star Wars-inspired models over the past two decades since we first launched LEGO Star Wars sets. As Lucasfilm celebrates their 50th anniversary, it seemed fitting to challenge ourselves and push the limits of what is possible with LEGO bricks by recreating a fan-favorite Star Wars character in great detail like we have never achieved before. We are delighted with the result and hope our fans get as much joy out of building the sets as we did designing it.”

The set will be available exclusively from official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop from 1st May 2021. Prices are as follows: priced from 199 EUR/USD – 179,99 GBP – 329.99 AUD – 269.99 CAD. For more information, visit the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

It’s interesting to compare the new #75308 LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 set to the #10225 LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 released in 2012. That set was also targeting advanced builders, contained 2,127 pieces, and retailed for $180. (See the earlier set below.)

What do you think? How do you like the new version of R2-D2? Is this a set you’re planning to get? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!

I passed on the last R2 model because I didn’t like the blocky-ness of the head, so this one I do plan on getting when I have the funds. Lego, ya gotta stop making all of these awesome sets so I can keep a few bucks in my checking account and a few square inches of my living space open! 😉

I think its great that LEGO can re-release sets, but, I think LEGO should try something new. Like bring back old space television show and make them into sets. Like Battle star galaxtica , Buck Rogers or even the Black Hole .. These are things that can be re-introduced to a new generation . I have nothing against STAR WARS but, I think LEGO has react a wall. Maybe? ( See about the licensing of course).

Doubtful if they have anything near the wide appeal. I guess Star Trek is the only francise that could compete, and the license seems to be currently held by Mattel.

Well if STAR TREK is the next big thing and LEGO can’t make it into there own theme. look at the space t. v shows (from the choices from my first comment) and make a theme out of them. LEGO has been trying to get more young and older adults to get them more interested in the hobby What better way is to bring back and create something from the past that the young and older adults remember from there childhood. At the same time create new fans. Something to think about. ( Oh, by the way , I think Disney own THE BLACK HOLE license ).

Well, Battlestar Galactica has a minor following, but at least it’s somewhat of a cult franchise. The Black Hole on the other hand is not a franchise at all, it’s just a single movie.

For Buck Rogers (or Flash Gordon for that matter), I guess George Lucas and his team picked up the Space Opera tradition and made it more palatable (or at least better marketed) for modern audiences. As I recall from the 80’s, and the last time they tried to modernize the concept and the old characters, they rather self-ironically tried to camp things up, too. It was as if they didn’t really took the foundation seriously.

And, that aside, even as a sci-fi fan who can enjoy a wide scope of its various sub-genres, I find it hard to come up with franchises who would have more than niche interest across various generations, compared to Star Wars.

(In Japan, there’s Gundam and similar mecha series who has wide appeal across generations, but just about the whole genre is a niche genre outside East Asia.)

As many have noted, Star Wars has basically taken all resources from Lego making up their own Space themes, as well. The designers have big problems coming up with something that couldn’t fit in somewhere along the Star Wars franchise…

Well, there are bucketloads of money ‘within Japan’, but the franchise becomes increasingly niche the further you go outside of East Asia…

It’s more rounded than the previous one. Looks cool. Not my thing though.

Nothing can beat the STAR WARS franchise ( many have tried. even STAR TREK is trailing behind). I’m just saying that until a new STAR WARS movie comes out , there will be nothing new. Except that LEGO is making STAR WARS sets from Disney + and that’s probably what they will do for now. As for the other space franchise and one movie, I still think its worth a try. when these t. v . shows came out they did have action figures to go with the space shows and BLACK HOLE (the one movie). LEGO is not shy about repeating sets from various themes ( even STAR WARS) As I say its just a thought and it might become something good or bad. you never know until you try.

Yeah, Disney+ might be a better bet than only nostalgic rehashes for the years when there aren’t any new movies.

Lego apparently has some Marvel sets and a CMF series based on Disney+ shows in the pipeline, as well.
