Space Marines

Here I show you my Space Marines. They are not related to the Halo or Warhammer video game characters, they are just generic cool guys performing missions in outer space.

I’m not so much of a LEGO sci-fi builder (check out Nannan’s work for that!), but I wanted to build this highly customized army to showcase some of Hazel’s amazing custom accessories.

Here is an overall front view of the army (you can click on any of the pictures for a larger view):

Here is a side view of the whole army:

And here are the individual guys:

HELMET: by Amazing Armory
ARMOR: by Amazing Armory
WEAPON: by BrickForge
SHIELD: by Amazing Armory

I painted the helmet, armor and shield with silver Testors hobby paint. The Brickforge gun is customized with modified translucent-green LEGO elements.

This is the smoothest armor by Hazel and could be used for many realistic and fantasy themes. It fits LEGO minifigs seamlessly! (By the way; all three of the armor pieces from Hazel have a standard LEGO-size stud at the center of the back to attach various LEGO or custom accessories as you can see here.)

HELMET: by LEGO
ARMOR: by Amazing Armory
WEAPON: from LEGO parts

This is my favorite armor from Hazel. The small dagger tucked into the shoulder-armor is such a sweet touch!

Although this piece is based on the armor of the “Deep Eyes” military unit of the Final Fantasymovie, with the proper paint-job it can also fit samurai warriors well. This armor-piece was originally dark gray, but I painted it silver to match the other guys. Note how perfectly LEGO’s silver finish on the helmet matches Testors’ silver paint.

HELMET: by Amazing Armory
ARMOR: by Amazing Armory
WEAPON: from LEGO parts

The helmet on this guy is just amazing! Note the cut-outs for the eyes. I have used a standard LEGO head, but I have seen other LEGO-fans using trans-red or other translucent color heads, giving the minifig a futuristic look. Again; the helmet and armor is painted silver by me.

ARMOR: LEGO jetpack & Brickforge pauldron
WEAPON: from LEGO parts

I customized the front of the jetpack on this guy a bit with a touch of silver paint, and translucent-green “light” made from the tip of a LEGO antenna.

Hope the photos here give you a good idea of what is possible with Hazel’s custom pieces. Let me know what you think in the Comment section below! 😀

Amazing Armory – Overview

WEBSITE: Amazing Armory (coming soon)
LOCATION: Hong Kong
ACCESSORIES AVAILABLE VIA:
United Armory, FireStar Toys
GALLERY: flickr
PRICE: expensive but amazing!
SHIPPING: check the websites of the above listed USA or UK reseller.

If you want to equip your LEGO minifigs with the most unique custom accessories, you would have to check out Hazel Tam’s work. Hazel is a Hong Kong based customizer, and his skills to create custom elements are wicked!

QUALITY: Hazel’s focus is primarily on creating custom accessories (armor, helmets, weapons, etc.) based on video-games, comics and fantasy worlds. Each of his custom pieces is hand-crafted then cast in durable ABS plastic. He also makes sure that his custom pieces fit LEGO minifigures as well as possible.

MOLD DETAIL: Hazel’s work is more organic and unique than machine-made elements. They are the work of an artist. Hazel puts a lot of effort into every tiny detail, giving his accessories an action-figure style realistic look.

COLORS: Hazel tries to match LEGO colors, or at least create colors that would fit well with LEGO elements. Because most of Hazel’s customs are only released in one or two colors, LEGO-fans often further customize them by various methods of painting or dying (as you can see on the United Armory logo above).

In 2010 Hazel also released a really sweet guitar-set that has been available in many solid and translucent colors.

SUMMARY: Hazel’s custom pieces are totally unique. It is really worth getting some just for the novelty of the pieces. (Check out my Space Marines featuring Hazel’s custom pieces!) Prices are high, but due to the rarity and uniqueness of the items, demand is also very high. You can always resell the pieces you no longer want on the secondary market, although I doubt you would want to part with them. 😉

Hazel’s own website, Amazing Armory (also referred to as AMA) has been under construction. However most of his custom pieces are available through his USA reseller United Armory (run by PEDRO), and his UK reseller Firestar Toys. Visit their stores and make your minifigs happy! 😀
