The #40530 LEGO Jane Goodall Tribute is the currently available promotional set, free with purchases of $120 or more at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop. It’s one of the nicest recently available freebies, so I thought we should talk about it in more detail.

You might remember that LEGO released two other tribute sets in the past couple of years. The #40410 LEGO Charles Dickens Tribute, which was a Christmas freebie in 2020, and the #40450 LEGO Amelia Earhart Tribute, free with purchases in March of last year.

Following the trend of these wonderfully detailed sets commemorating the legacy of inspirational personalities, the #40530 LEGO Jane Goodall Tribute highlights the work of English primatologist and anthropologist, Jane Goodall. Seen as the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees, Goodall is best known for her 60-year study of the social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees. The first three pages of the instruction booklet feature some interesting details from her life and research.

The set itself contains 276 pieces, a minifigure of Jane Goodall herself, and three cute monkeys. The box is also nicely designed with a photo of Goodall and a couple of highlighted details from the set.

This set is suitable for both play and display. Display features include a stickered plaque and the black tile framed base. The scene features a tropical setting with lush vegetation and a small creek with colorful flowers. The three little monkeys can sit on the treetops, hanging from the vines, or frolic on the ground. The Jane Goodall minifig comes with binoculars, so she can study her monkey friends.

Although this set doesn’t take that long to build, the landscaping techniques are enjoyable and could be repurposed for other scenes.

The set is also a great parts-pack with lots of landscaping elements like leaves, vines, flowers, plants, translucent pieces for water, and wedge pieces for creating natural curves. In the video below, you can see a time-lapse built of the set. (It’s also worth noting that the set includes elements made from sustainably sourced plant-based plastic.)

In summary, this is a lovely set in every way, and I do hope that LEGO will continue this trend of inspiring and nicely detailed tribute sets. The threshold to qualify for it is a bit steep, but if you plan your purchases wisely, it’s a nice bonus.
