With LEGO Ninjago celebrating its 10th anniversary, we are getting some excellent sets in the LEGO Ninjago Legacy collection. The LEGO Ninjago Legacy line was first introduced back in 2019, featuring remakes of some of the most popular and iconic sets from the history of LEGO Ninjago. They are perfect for those who missed out on the early Ninjago sets, or those who are collecting variations of the sets and characters.

In 2019, we got eight LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets from Season 1 and Season 2. Some of the highlights are the #70668 LEGO Ninjago Jay’s Storm Fighter, the #70669 LEGO Ninjago Cole’s Earth Driller, the #70670 LEGO Ninjago Monastery of Spinjitzu, and the #70679 LEGO Ninjago Ultra Dragon. In 2020, we got seven more LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets from Season 1, Season 2, Season 3 and Season 4, including the #71702 LEGO Ninjago Golden Mech, the #71704 LEGO Ninjago Kai Fighter, and the beautiful #71705 LEGO Ninjago Destiny’s Bounty. If you are an early Ninjago fan, just hearing these set names will bring back nostalgic memories! By the way, several of these earlier LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets are still available at the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.

This year is the 10th anniversary of LEGO Ninjago, and as expected, we are getting even more LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets. Just in the month of January, we already got more sets than in previous years. The four new LEGO Ninjago Epic Battle sets are small, but they feature key components from the saga. Each of the sets feature one of the ninja, a member of one of the main opponents (Skulkins, Nindroids, Serpentine, and Ghosts), a small display, and a full array of unique weapons in translucent colors. These small sets are only $9.99 each and a great way to boost (or start out) your Ninjago collection.

We also got five new larger LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets; the #71735 LEGO Ninjago Tournament of Elements, the #71736 LEGO Ninjago Boulder Blaster, the #71737 LEGO Ninjago X-1 Ninja Charger, and the #71738 LEGO Ninjago Zane’s Titan Mech Battle – each featuring a special 10th anniversary golden form of one of the ninjas on a small display stand. The fifth set is the #71742 LEGO Ninjago Overlord Dragon, with a dragon form and minifig form of the Overlord, as well as Lloyd. This set doesn’t include a 10th anniversary minifig.

It’s really interesting to compare the remakes with the original sets and discover all the upgrades and changes. You may find that with some of the sets, you prefer the older version, while with others, you like the upgrade better. The largest of the new LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets (and also the largest 10th anniversary set) is the #71741 LEGO Ninjago City Gardens. We talked about this set before (see links at the end of this post), but to recap, it is a massive, 5,685-piece set that is meant to connect with the previously released #70620 LEGO Ninjago City (2017), and #70657 LEGO Ninjago City Docks (2018). The set comes with eighteen minifigs, including a special 10th anniversary golden Sensei Wu with the same small display stand as the other 10th anniversary ninja. (Note that up to this point, we got a golden 10th anniversary minifig version of all the main ninja except for Zane and Nya.) I’m planning to review this set in detail in the near future (it takes a long time to build it), and in the meantime, you can take a look at all of its details at the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.

As I mentioned previously, the LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets are a great way to start a LEGO Ninjago collection if you missed out on the original sets. The updated sets are comparable – and in some cases even better – than the earlier releases. Even more special are the LEGO Ninjago Legacy sets made for the 10th anniversary of LEGO Ninjago, as they feature a limited edition golden minifigure. And to crown them all is Ninjago City Gardens with an incredibly detailed segment of Ninjago City, full of Easter eggs referring to the rich saga of LEGO Ninjago.
