Collecting LEGO minifigures is a popular hobby amongst LEGO fans, and discussing how to display them is a common topic. We have talked about a number of different methods already (see links at the end of this post), and today I wanted to share with you a technique that I recently ran across and was very impressed with; combining LEGO displays with pyrography. 🙂

LEGO fan Oliboy is an avid collector of LEGO minifigures, especially LEGO Super Heroes. His Batman collection is particularly impressive, with all the LEGO Batman suits released so far (except for the San Diego Comic-Con versions, which are super expensive on the secondary market due to their rarity). Oliboy displays his minifigs in shadow boxes, which is a method used by other LEGO fans as well, however, he goes the extra mile to make a pyrographed background for each display case.

Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks to create a picture or spell out words. Oliboy uses plywood to burn the images on, then colors them in with markers, and finally seals them with a spray-on clear coat. He explains the method in this step-by-step tutorial, in case you want to try it out yourself.

Really nice minifig displays, aren’t they? Below are a few other examples from Oliboy’s collection. I especially like the LEGO Lord of the Rings display with the pretty elvish writing. If you would like to see more, visit Oliboy’s albums here: LEGO Super Heroes Minifig Collection, and LEGO Minifig Shadow Box Displays.

What do you think? How do you like these custom LEGO display cases? Are you inspired to make your own? What other minifig display methods do you especially like? Feel free to share your thoughts and own solutions in the comment section below! 😉

July 2017 – new LEGO sets & promotions

While we got a huge number of new LEGO sets in June (see: June 2017 – New LEGO Sets and Promotions, and reviews at the end of this post), LEGO also kept a few sets and promotions for July. If you need a break from all the summer outdoor activities, take a look at what LEGO has to offer this month. Details below. 🙂

FREE MINI LEGO PIGGY BANK: From July 10th until the end of the month you can get a #40251 LEGO Mini Piggy Bank free with purchases of $75 or more. This is a cute little 3-in-1 set that can be rebuilt into three different animals. This special is valid on all items at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO DOUBLE VIP POINTS: This is probably the most important event for dedicated LEGO fans this month. Double VIP Points don’t come up that often, and they are a great way to maximize your savings. Normally, you would get one VIP Point for every dollar you spend, and once you reach 100 VIP Points you can redeem them for a $5 saving on a future purchase. During the Double VIP Points period, you earn twice as many points, so your savings add up much faster. This is the best time to make larger purchases that you have been holding off, but of course, it works on smaller orders as well. Keep in mind that this offer is only valid until the end of this week, so make sure you don’t miss out. You might want to start with the What’s New section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO VIP EARLY ACCESS: Starting on July 17th, LEGO VIP members will get early access to the brand new #10258 LEGO Creator London Bus we talked about the other day (see: LEGO Creator London Bus Press-Release). Regular release will be on August 1st. It is already listed under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

JULY LEGO STORE EVENTS: If you live near a LEGO store, there are some fun events you could participate in. From July 1st-16th, you can be one of the first 80 people to make a $75 purchase at a LEGO store to register for an exclusive 18+ LEGO BrickHeadz Wonder Woman building event, which will take place between July 17th to the 31st (actual dates vary by store). On July 11th and 12th the free VIP Monthly Mini Model Build is an octopus (you need to pre-register your child for this event). Then, on July 14th and the 28th you can join the Family Game Night to try out the #40161 LEGO What Am I? game, and the #40174 LEGO Iconic Chess set. You will also get 50% off the price of the LEGO What Am I? game, if you purchase the chess set.

LEGO MINECRAFT THE MOUNTAIN CAVE: The #21137 LEGO Minecraft The Mountain Cave is now available for everyone not just LEGO VIP members. This is the largest LEGO Minecraft set ever released, and it is massive! This would be a great purchase during the Double VIP Points period. You can find it under the LEGO Minecraft section of the Online LEGO Shop.

UPDATE ON LEGO IDEAS APOLLO SATURN V: If you missed out on the #21309 LEGO Ideas NASA Apollo Saturn V, you are not alone. Due to immense popularity, the set was out of stock within the first half an hour after it was added to the Online LEGO Shop, and it has been out of stock ever since. If you did make a purchase during the first couple of days of June, you probably already got the set, or it is likely on its way (I ordered mine on the 2nd of June, and even though it showed as out of stock with a 30-day backorder, I received it on the 7th of June). If you made a purchase later, it is best to be patient and wait until it is back in stock, rather than pay significantly more to resellers. This is what LEGO’s customer service wrote about the shortage:

“This is a very popular set and we’ve had a lot more orders than we expected. We don’t have any in stock at the moment, but don’t worry, we’re working hard to make more. Due to the overwhelming number of backorders for this item, we’ve also decided to make it temporarily unavailable until our distribution catches up with the thousands of backorders we currently have. No need to purchase the item through resellers on third party sites. We are making more, and this set will be around for a couple years. Keep an eye on the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop regularly, and as soon as we have an expected stock date, you will have ability to order or place a backorder for the item.”

July is going to be a great month to catch up on the summer LEGO sets that were released in June, especially during the Double VIP Points period. This includes the LEGO City Jungle, LEGO City Coast Guard, LEGO Creator, LEGO Elves, LEGO Friends, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and the second wave of The LEGO Batman Movie sets. You can find them all under the What’s New section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? Are you excited about all the new LEGO sets this summer? Do you have any favorite sets you are planning to add to your collection? Did you get some of them already? Feel free to share your thoughts and own review in the comment section below! 😉
