LEGO Lord of the Rings Tower of Orthanc

The #10237 LEGO Lord of the Rings Tower of Orthanc set is finally unveiled! Just got the press-release of this long-awaited and long-rumored set, so let’s dive right into the details of this Ultimate Collector Series set! 🙂

LEGO Lord of the Rings Tower of Orthanc

First of all, just a little bit about the Tower of Orthanc itself. If you remember from the Lord of the Rings books or movies you know that the tower is also called the Tower of Isengard that stood in the center of the Ring of Isengard. It was constructed out of a single piece of black stone called Orthanc (hence the name) by an unknown process. No weaponry or magic could harm it, except the tools by which it was shaped, which of course were forgotten. Isengard is surrounded by the land of the Ents, the tree-like shepherds of the forest, with Treebeard being the oldest amongst them. At some point in the history of Middle Earth Isengard and the Tower of Orthanc was given the Saruman, who used it as a base to search for the One Ring. We all know how that worked out…

#10237 LEGO Lord of the Rings Tower of Orthanc Eagle

And of course the character we have been all waiting for with curiosity is the Ent. Although he is not mentioned specifically as Treebeard, I assume he is. There was also a rumored smaller Ent set earlier this year – I’m not sure if that’s still coming, but it would be nice to be able to set up a whole army of Ents to march on Isengard. 😀

#10237 LEGO Lord of the Rings Tower of Orthanc Ent

The Ent is awesome, isn’t it? Love the little mushroom at his feet! And below are some more pictures of the interior details of the LEGO Lord of the Rings Tower of Orthanc set.

I DON’T CARE IF I DON’T GET ANY OTHER LOTR SET, IM GONNA BUY THIS! (How much is it?)

    • admin April 27, 2013, 10:57 AM

Price is in the article. Not cheap, but totally worth it in my opinion. Better start saving up for it now! 🙄

  • Kenton April 27, 2013, 10:10 AM

Yes! After hearing the rumors for a (long) while, it’s nice to see it finally announced. As a LOTR/Hobbit completist, I will happily pick this one up. *insert wallet-groaning sound* The LOTR sets this year are adding some very welcome minifigures; I just hope they keep going into another wave!

  • Chris of Yoda Archives April 27, 2013, 10:52 AM

This set is beautiful. I really want to get it. Treebeard could be a set himself.
The set is 199.99. That is a lot but it is such a great set. I’ll be watching for a sale or double point days before I can get it.

    • admin April 27, 2013, 11:01 AM

Chris, yeah, it is gorgeous! Since this is an exclusive, and it will probably be selling as long as the Hobbit movies are going on, and likely will be very popular, I will doubt it will go on sale anytime soon, or anytime at all. Our best bet is Double VIP points, or maybe a sale on Amazon. Although again; with exclusives that’s pretty rare. Perhaps before Christmas Amazon will do a sale. 🙂

      • Chris of Yoda Archives April 27, 2013, 1:35 PM

I missed that it is an exclusive. Don’t change anything a set this big I’s have to buy direct from LEGO for the points. So double points or maybe if the have a cool freebie like the Mini Sopwith Camel offer from last year. If I’m spending $200 might as well get some extras.

        • admin April 27, 2013, 4:10 PM

Chris, LEGO usually has some great offers right when school starts back in the fall so you might want to wait until then. 😉

        • Eric at a LEGO a Day April 29, 2013, 11:00 AM

Agreed. This will be a double-points purchase for me. I will get it for sure. Just need to time it right. 😉

          • The Dark Jedi May 25, 2013, 6:01 PM

$ 249.99 for me. 🙁 The set is still awesome though, so I better start saving!

  • Fire Ninja Jedi April 27, 2013, 11:00 AM

That’s going to be one tough set to get! The features, though, are all fantastic! I’d love to get this set….we’ll see! 😀

  • Quigley April 27, 2013, 11:54 AM

the architecture is so amaising!!!! it’s so acurate to the movie!!!!! they put so mutch detail into this set! i wish i had the money to gat it… 🙁

    • admin April 27, 2013, 4:05 PM

Yeah, I agree. The details are just so awesome! 😀

  • ninja of stealth April 27, 2013, 12:36 PM

yo! okay, first of all the great eagle. nice! its pretty awesome to get those big animals like the rancor from star wars or the wampa from star wars and etc. treebeard (is that his name?) 😀 yes the little mushroom would go great in my collection (one problem…. that would be my first mushroom.) now for the best part the (I’m going to call it the tower.) ”tower” is cool. first the dungeon, I also have a lot of those like the rancor pit, the random prison in ninjago epic dragon battle! but this dungeon is pretty insane. and the other rooms are cool! this set reminds me of the haunted house on monster fighters. that… was cool

    • Noahnace10 April 27, 2013, 4:19 PM

That’s weird, it reminds me of the haunted house too. 😆

      • mr. dursey April 29, 2013, 1:40 PM

I think that’s because of the small ladder that leads to the attic 😀

  • pythor953 April 27, 2013, 12:42 PM

I’m fairly confident the ent isn’t treebeard and treebeard will come in the rumoured smaller set. Either way the set is beutiful and such a must have lotr set. All I need now is a fell beast, the witch king and the balrog and I’ll be the happiest person on earth.

    • admin April 27, 2013, 4:06 PM

Yeah, I’m hoping that the Treebeard set is still coming. Haven’t heard any update on it for months, so I wasn’t sure if it is still scheduled for release. We shall see…

      • Chris of Yoda Archives April 27, 2013, 11:23 PM

Might be why Merry and Pippin weren’t included with the set. If there is a standalone Treebeard set, I’ll get it.

        • admin April 28, 2013, 9:01 AM

That’s a really good observation! My hopes for the stand-alone Treabeard just went up again! 😀

          • Strider April 28, 2013, 9:38 PM

I have seen the movies numerous times, and from his big grampa face to his stumpy legs I can assure you that the ent in this set looks just like Treebeard. Funny they did not include Merry and Pippin. This does not mean he will not be in a smaller set as well. I really think they should have confined Treebeard to a less expensive set, raised the price, and given Orthanc a back. The one chance we have a set that uses black bricks, (okay so their have been others, black bricks are pretty rare still) and they leave us with no back. So we can, “…play inside!” Anyone buying an exlusive is old enough to not want to play around with the set. I mean yeah check out the features but if I had the choice to be able to move around a few plastic people our have a actual realistic Orthanc…the former would be my definet choice. Great set but I was disapointed of the lack of full completed set in an exclusive. You could say, “…well Treebeard is in it to make up for it…” but they are already making another ent set. Or so I have heard. Anyway, still good set but I’m not buying it just yet.

            • admin April 29, 2013, 9:18 AM

Strider, I have heard others being somewhat disappointed that the the tower is only three-sided. Some people suggested that it woudl have been better if it opens up like the Haunted House, which is a good point. However others suggested that since most people will display the tower on a shelf anyway, it doesn’t really matter as the back open side won’t show. I think it is a beautiful set and I like it as it is, but I also understand those who rather had a full tower instead of the Ent. The good thing about LEGO though is that you can always alter your tower and make it any way you want. 😉

              • Eric at a LEGO a Day April 29, 2013, 11:07 AM

I will display this on a shelf as you said, but it will still bother me knowing that the back is open. because it is black, and black is relatively cheap, I’m pretty sure I will add a back side. I’d like it to look symmetrical.

                • admin April 29, 2013, 11:28 AM

Yeah, I thought of that too; black parts are quite cheap! I actually find this set very elegant and artistic. It is amazing how nicely it looks with just one color! If you can make it symmetrical that will be perfection!

  • Ruairi Ben McClintock April 27, 2013, 1:08 PM

will it be in smith.ie or only lego.com awesome set could be cheaper tho

    • admin April 27, 2013, 4:09 PM

Exclusives are usually only sold in LEGO stores, the Online LEGO Shop and over the phone. And sometimes at some of their larger retailers. In the USA usually Amazon carries them, and the larger TRU stores. I’m not familiar with smith.ie, but if they normally carry LEGO exclusives and Ultimate Collector Series sets then they should carry it. If not, then it is unlikely they will carry this one.

  • Fikko3107 April 27, 2013, 2:27 PM

Well, I’m sorry but I must say the ent was rather anti-climatic. My standard was set really high thanks to that brotherhood workshop video… But hey, it still looks great!

    • admin April 27, 2013, 4:11 PM

LOL! Ents come in all shapes and sizes. I like him a lot as he is, but I’m sure you can also easily change him up to your liking. 😉

      • Noahnace10 April 27, 2013, 4:21 PM

YES!!! I think he doesnt look very nice either. I really really wish he was the BH WS one. Theirs is so cool…

      • Fikko3107 April 28, 2013, 5:47 AM

Well, I haven’t watch the full movie yet, so I didn’t know that. But it makes sense, since Birch, Oak or Spruce trees are of different sizes. However, I doubt this is Treebeard. I don’t think Merry and Pippin can perch on him…

        • admin April 28, 2013, 9:07 AM

          Hobbits are very small. 😉

  • i really think it needs more minfigs

    • pythor953 April 28, 2013, 4:41 AM

Yeh I agree with you on that one, there aren’t nearly enough orcs in this set. I was expecting a small army. Having said that I think lego are trying to get people to buy the orc forge set to go with this. If that’s the case it would explain the lack of orcs.

  • legostuff71 April 27, 2013, 9:25 PM

Very cool. I think this set might be sold out on the same day its out.(gosh, I hope not .) I am also very curious about what the second wave of the HOBBIT sets look like . I s there another toy fair in the summer this this year., because there is always a leak or link which ever you prefer.

    • admin April 28, 2013, 9:00 AM

I think we will start to see leaked images sometime late summer, early fall as the second wave of Hobbit sets is scheduled for the end of the year – as far as I know. 😉

  • Cango April 28, 2013, 3:38 AM

This is a female set because I fell in love with it <3

  • Darth Awesme April 28, 2013, 5:12 AM

    MY PREACIOUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

  • The Yellow Ninja April 28, 2013, 8:57 AM

Oh wow, I love the detail! This set is very breathtaking! I (unlike some people) love that ent figure! I like how it includes pictures of the three named wizards in the set, but it looks as if the pictures are stickers instead of print. It would be nice if they printed them, instead of making stickers, like they did in the palace cinema set. But it is still a delightful set. Well it looks like I’m going to have to save up for it, so I’d better start working 😛

  • Austin April 28, 2013, 12:12 PM

    I WANT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Austin April 28, 2013, 12:17 PM

I like the room with the wizard paintings and it has 2359 pieces thats less then 10 cents a piece!
    : )

  • Eric at a LEGO a Day April 29, 2013, 11:08 AM

I think this is priced perfectly. It could easily be a $250 set.

  • darkon April 29, 2013, 1:50 PM

This is the best LOTR set Lego has made so far! The size and the detailing is really great! I wish it came with more figures though. Giant collectors sets are nice, but almost no one, including me, can afford to buy them.

    • admin April 29, 2013, 4:11 PM

Darkon, don’t underestimate the buying-power of LEGO fans. If you hang out at Brickset you would know what I mean, as that is where a lot of the serious collectors hang out. The amount of LEGO AFOLs buy every month is staggering. Seriosly. When kids come over to my house they get all starry-eyed seeing my colectiong, but it is NOTHING compared to what some AFOLs have. And not just one or two, but lots of them take this hobby very seriously and happy to spend lots of money on it. To be honest, if I were rich, I would do the same. 🙄

  • Meneldur son of Garamar April 29, 2013, 9:04 PM

Other than the disappointing fact that Merry and Pippin aren’t included, this set is a must-have! I especially love the different (and unique) techniques used on Orthanc. I have all the 2012 lego Lord of the Rings sets and am looking forward to collecting the new ones!

  • ike April 30, 2013, 3:13 PM

This is putting the new iPod in great danger of being forgotten! Jaw dropping, amazing, but we’ll see broke LOTR fans!

  • Frank May 2, 2013, 9:06 AM

Now they only need the eye of Sauron.

    • Meneldur son of Garamar May 6, 2013, 7:44 PM

      Technically, they do.

  • Meneldur son of Garamar May 4, 2013, 2:15 PM

I still am flabbergasted that Merry and Pippin aren’t included. Also I think that this set should include Gandalf in two forms: Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White much like Lego did with the Death Star set with Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. The detailing however is amazing. I agree with Strider that it should be four-sided and that the back should be hinged. Still I am extremely pleased with the other features. This dwarfs Wizard Battle but I was wondering if Wizard Battle set would fit inside Orthanc. I was surprised when I saw that they basically built another Wizard Battle and stuck it into Orthanc. Personally I think that the Palantir in Orthanc is better than the one included in Wizard Battle. The Battle at the Black Gate, Pirate Ship Ambush, and the Council of Elrond however are good sets. Pirate Ship Ambush should have been named something different though and when I first heard about “the Pirate Ship Ambush” I almost didn’t believe that a set by that name was real. I think it should have been named “The Corsairs of Umbar” or something better. Still they are pretty good sets and I am pleased that Lego decided to continue the Lord of the Rings theme.
