If you are new to the LEGO Ninjago spinner game, below I will share with you the basic rules of Spinjitzu that will get you started. After playing with these rules for awhile, you might just want to change them a little,ย so I have also included several suggestions of my own. ๐
Before we start with the Spinjitzu rules though, it’s probably a good idea to mention SP, which means Spinjitzu Power. Spinjitzu Power refers to the element and amount of the element (Fire, Lightning, Earth, Ice) marked on the side (bottom leftย and top right) of all the Spinjitzu battle-cards, and on the bottom of your character-card.
A Ninjago character-card won’t be in your card-deck while you’re playing, but it determines which character you will play at the beginning of the game, and the amount of SP you will have during the game. The reason this is important is because you can only play a battle-card if your character has equal or more SP as the battle-card.
The basic rules of the Ninjago Spinjitzu game are as followsย (and hopefully I’m not boring the more advanced players):
โก Pick a Ninjago character, the matching character-card, three weapons (you’re only supposed to use one golden weapon, but who cares), a spinner, a spinner-crown, and your battle-deck (consisting only battle-cards, and no duplicates).
โก Shuffle your battle-deck and draw four cards. These are the cards you will play during the game (one before the spin, one after, and a Scroll-card or Challenge-card after loosing a weapon). According to the official Spinjitzu rules, you may only pick up a maximum of one card per turn, if you have less than four cards in your hand. However, it is much nicer to pick up cards until you have four each time – that way you might actually get though your deck during the game! ๐
โก Then comes the actual spinning. Since the previous two points can be quite complicated (especially when everyone is trying to explain them at once) it might be a good idea not to introduce them to a new player until they are comfortable with the idea of spinning.
Of course whoever has their character fall off the spinner looses. In theory at least,ย this means that the first person to fall looses, even if the second person falls off soon after. However this might be hard to judge, so you can change this to a ten second difference. If neither (or both) characters fall, then the spin was a tie, and you repeat the spin (without changing your weapon, but you canย make necessary fixes toย your character/spinner).
This whole process can get tedious though, especially if you are spinning in a large Spinjitzu arena. So I like using a rule I call the three-spin-rule: after three ties all cards played at the beginning of the round are cancelled, and you can play (or discard – as the case may be) a card, since this is the end of that spin. (You may also discard – not play! – a Scroll-card after the spin.)
There are several problems with using the arena included in Ninjago starter-sets; for one thing, it’s hard to keep them in place! Plus, you can’t really fall off the edge or avoid your opponent and their traps – which might benefit you sometimes, but can also hurt you! Another difficulty is that the official Ninjago arenas are really too small for more than two players – although you can certainly add more pieces to make them larger. Personally though, I prefer a table-top –ย especially if it has removable legs and slightly elevated sides! 8)
๐ก There are three main differences in how you can spin. The first way is simply spinning normally: hard and fast, but not in any particular direction. This is useful when there are no traps, your character is not on one leg (or other non-beneficial position) or if you are the aggressor (the traps are yours, your opponentโs character is on one leg, etc.). Under certain circumstances this spinning technique has its disadvantages, but typically it is very useful.
๐ก Another way to spin is slamming. Tilt your spinner slightly in the direction you wish to go; often straight at your opponent. This is great if you are playing with the spin-off-the-edge-and-die rule, especially if you have Up for Grabs/Strike Down and/or Sensei’s Whistle/Sensei’s Teatime (“win if both characters fall”/”this spin is a tie”) cards in your hand, or if your opponentโs character is on one leg or trying to avoid your traps. The major disadvantage of this type of spinning is that if your opponent can guess what you are up to, they may manage to move out of the way before you spin. In any case, this technique usually takes a lot of practice (I often end up running straight off the edge) and is certainly not recommended if you’re on your last weapon! ๐
๐ก The last type of spinning technique is an evasive spin. When your opponent has played a trap-card, has their character stand on one leg/bend over backwards, or added some formidable pieces to their spinner (like Whip Attack), you will probably want to use a very light, spin-along-the-edge technique. The major disadvantage of this kind of spinning is that your opponent may realize what you are intending to do, and slam you accordingly – or, if they have the Double Stars or Spitfire Snake Crown-cards (“throw it and your character-card during spin”, or “throw all discarded Fire-cards during spin”), they may manage to knock you off the edge if they throw hard and have good aim! ๐
And that’s all there is to it! All in all, the way you spin depends on who you are fighting and what cards you and your opponent have played. Which of course brings us to the next topic: the Ninjago cards, but they will require a separate post all to themselves! ๐
So what do you think? Have you had any success with some of the methods I have shared? Do you have other tips for playing the Spinjitzu game? Or do you have any questions? Feel free toย share in the comment section below! NINJA… GO!!! ๐

Nice post!!!
Thanks! ๐
So glad there is another writer for Ninjago, so Admin can focus on other posts.
gid617, you are an excellent writer. Ninjago is my fav theme, and i really like this post!
What sets do you have (ninjago) and what sets do you wish you had?
Lets see. . . I have 15 spinners, plus the three “old” booster packs, and I also have NRG Jay and Zane ZX pretty much on the way.
My 15 spinners are:
Kai
Jay vs. Fracjaw
Cole
Zane
Nya
Kai DX
Cole DX
Kendo Kai
Kendo Zane
Samurai X
Kai ZX
NRG Kai vs. Chokun
NRG Cole
Plus I also have the Ninjago Battle Arena (the one w/Sensei Wu normal and his spinner but no cards).
I wish I had gotten Zane ZX, and also Lord Garmadon (and I would have liked Sensei Wu). I also want Cole ZX vs. Rattla, but I’m saving up for that so it’s possible I’ll get it in the future.
As far as sets go, I only have the Skull Motorbike and the Training Outpost – both from 2011. I am hoping to get the Ultra Sonic Raider (although I don’t have nearly enough money yet!) and I kind of wish I had got Jay’s Storm Fighter (although I still could), and Cole’s Earth Dragon. Actually, I couldn’t have afforded most of those things I didn’t get – except Zane DX, which is why he’s on top! ๐ I’d also like Kendo Jay’s Booster Pack and the three fire spinners I’m missing – but since they are snakes, I probably would be allowed to get them anyways! ๐ Olus I want Sensei Wu’s normal charcter card. And thanks for your complements on my writing! ๐ ๐
Oops – I meant that since they are snakes I probably would not be allowed to get them! ๐
I also have the 2011 headband and two card pouches plus the NeatOh! case.
gid617 you have alot of spinners! I was wondering what cards the weapon pack comes with + Chokun’s SP.
Geneva, I have been meaning to ask you; do you know what all those little symbols and numbers mean at the bottom of the cards? They are both on the character-cards and battle-cards:
There are some little star or shuriken-like symbols – some cards with one, some with more. There are the black symbols in the circle (only on the battle-cards), then there is a 7-digit number, then another number with a dash (like 19/125 on Zane ZX’s card, or on Sensei Wu’s card there is a *7). I have always wondered what all of those mean. ๐
The symbols on the battle cards specify what type it is; eg. two crossing swords means control; a scroll means it’s a challange card; a brick means a build (add something to your spinner) card; a plus, add a certain muber of SP to your character (it has a specific name but I’ve forgotton it!); a hand means force; a exploding bomb means trap; and I think that’s all. I am not sure what the seven digit number means – I think it’s related to which spinner it came with (when you order them that’s the way it turns out) but the 19/125 card means that there are 125 cards in this season (2012 – there were only 81 in 2011) and that is the 19th card organized by element – last year they were also organised by increasing SP (with golden cards counting as 200 more than the marked #), this year in’s by decreasong SP, as far as I can tell. The addition of Scroll cards (probably counted as 100 more than they are worth) and crown cards (don’t ask me how much more than they are worth these are counted! ๐ ) makes it a lot more difficult. The star means it’s a promotional card, or it comes in a special set (like last year’s card holder). Sensei Wu’s is, I’ll admit, an exception, but the only thing I can figure is that lego decided a little late to make him DX instead of normal (his normal charcter card is 16/81).
As far as the star symbols, I’m still wondering what they mean! I have noticed that the character cards always have at least as many stars as the battle card they come with that has the most # of stars – if that makes any sense! ๐ Other than that, it does seem pretty random!
Hope that helps! ๐
Thanks! Yes, that’s perfect! The Ninjago cards are awesome! Also love the artwork! ๐
Your welcome! ๐ I also noticed that I was wrong about the charcters always having as many stars as the card that has the most of the ones they come with – Kai doesn’t. ๐
Yeah, that’s what I notied too! Confusing… ๐
i think the star is how rare it is
That could make sense. ๐
hey im timbo! and im p.j. ๐ LOL
P.J.! ๐ That’s what one of my brother’s sometimes calles my other brother! ๐
i have 15 spinners and 2 booster packs
Oh no! ๐ You’re about to catch up with me! ๐
i have 15 spinners and 6 boosters ๐
Spinners:
Sensei Wu (original from Spinjitzu Dojo)
Lord Garmadon
Wyplash
Kruncha
Nya
Cole ZX vs. Rattla
Lasha
Samurai X
NRG Kai vs. Chokun
NRG Jay
NRG Cole
Spitta
Kendo Kai
Boosters:
Kendo Cole
Kendo Jay
Jay ZX
Zane ZX
Lloyd Garmadon
Mezmo
That’s a lot of booster packs! ๐ But I do have NRG Jay who wasn’t included in my 15 spinners and also Zane ZX’s booster pack. . . ๐ ๐
I have, jay vs frackjaw, lord garamadon, sensei Wu, lasha, fang-suei, kai ZX, spitta, kendo cole, lloyd, anf mezmo! Im hoping to get more later!
UPDATE: Guys, I have just learned that the following was announced by Kevin Hinkle (LEGO public relations rep): Ninjago will end with the next season and sets will be on the shelves thru 2013. He also indicated that it will be replaced with something even more amazing. Also, there is going to be at least 6 more series of collectible minifigures, and the LEGO Friends line is doing very well. ๐
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! WHY AM I COLLECTING THE SPINNERS? IM DONE WITH SPINNERS! AND WHAT IS MORE AMAZING THAN NINJAGO?
Admin, could u tell the people in episode 13 this too? They need to know! ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ
Pythor, you can also tell the others. You write here as much as I do. ๐
Ok ill try, i is just that my comptor is slow so im not on so much now.
i may just buy spinners for the minifigs and crown now[ not the spinner or cards] ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ
Why not the spinners or the cards? Surely you didn’t think that ninjago would last forever! ๐ If you ask me, this si insentive to get as many as you can now ๐ ๐
Well, it’s sad that it will end next season; but I beleive the more amazing part – lego is always doing something like that! ๐ and I’m just hoping it won’t be anything with bad guys that look too bad or my mom won’t like it ๐ Six more series of minifigs would make 13, right? Wouldn’t it make more sense to stop at 15 or 10?
Actually, Ninjago lasting three years is pretty good – most themes (other than the sort-of last forever themes – like City and SW) only last 1 year – 2 at most.
Yes, this is especially true for themes that are designed for kids. Kids grow up fast and what they were into 3 years ago is not likely their interest 3 years later. And the younger kids growing up after them want something new.
Yeah, that’s true. Besides, a theme ending gives you a chance to collect the sets you missed ๐
That’s actually a really good point. One of the problems with Star Wars is that some fans are in constant anxiety over wanting to collect all the sets – something that is pretty much impossible unless you are a millionaire and live in a huge house. I actually like smaller themes that doesn’t last that long, because if I want to collect all the sets, it is not impossible. They often go on sale too just before the end of their life, which is a great time to pick up missing sets! I have recently bought all my favorite Alien Conquest sets this way 50% off. I just love that theme! Also Prince of Persia. The colors in those sets are just gorgeous! ๐
Yeah; even trying to collect a three-year theme can get pretty tough! ๐ I’ve never actually gotten any sizable portion of any theme (except maybe Ninjago) but I know some one who collected all but one of the Power Miners sets! ๐ I do like Price of Persia, except for the tan heads. They just don’t mix well with yellow and don’t have the variety to compeate! ๐ Plus they don’t go well with bright-colored shirts/torsos and pants.
And yeah, I love it when the ones you’re missing go on sale! (It’s kind of nasty when the ones you bought at full price do though ๐ )
Geneva, yeah, Kevin said they wanted to end Ninjago on a high note, rather then having it drag out like Bionicle. As far as the collectible figs, Kevin said there is going to be AT LEAST six more. This means 6 more is already designed and scheduled for release (LEGO plans everything 4 years ahead), but there could be more. ๐
OK; I guess Lego doesn’t planed more than 1 1/2 years ahead? (Since 6 series three months apart is 1 1/2 years) And it is probably a good idea to come up with something new before the old stuff gets too boring! ๐ (Not that I’m bored with ninjago ๐ ).
Geneva, it takes years conceptualize, research, design, test, make, market and distribute a product (LEGO or otherwise). In regards to LEGO, in those four years some products will be in the concept stage, some in the design stage, some in the finalizing stage, etc. So 6 more collectible minifigure series means that those 6 have been already planned, approved and more or less finalized. In addition as LEGO is thinking about making new products they also have to keep their eyes open for market trends, the financial situation of the world, the future of the company, etc. So sometimes they may need to change or modify plans as they go. Hope that helps. ๐
Yeah, I kind of figured that they had the concepts planned several years in advance; but they don’t know for sure what they are going to make until about two years in advance – is that right? ๐ I know that they actually make them a year ahead – this year’s spinners say 2011 ๐ ๐
Kevin said that he actually knows LEGO sets and themes coming 4 years in advance. So it seems like whatever is planned four years ago is in a pretty solid stage. Perhaps not manufactured yet, but it has passed the concept and design stage. At least that is my understanding. ๐
Wow! Then they’re planning farther ahead than I thought! ๐
Pleasepleasepleaseplease ask him if LEGO has ANY intention of bringing Bionicle back. That would make my LIFE!!!!!!!!!! ๐
Dont diss Bionicle like that! IT WAS THE GREATEST THING IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE!
Ps. I’m actually not sooooo sad about Ninjago ending. Just because LEGO won’tmake sets anymore doesn’t mean that it’s dead! Think of all the stories you guys create! NINJA…GO!
๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ
I don’t know why LEGO would stop Ninjago becuase it’s one of their best selling themes. ๐
Nace, Kevin mentioned they didn’t want to drag out the series like Bionicle, which was very popular for a while, then fans lost interest. Kids grow up fast, and the same kids who are now interested in Ninjago will likely grow out of the theme in a few years, so LEGO didn’t want to get caught in that predicament.
Bionicle was AWESOME!!!!!!! I’m mad at you know. ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
I meat mad at you NOW. I WON!’T GROW UP!
Luca, there will always be devoted fans like you. (Actually, you are not the only one. In almost any LEGO fan event LEGO reps get asked if Bionicle will be back. The answer has always been “no”.) However LEGO has to make decisions based on numbers. When the numbers decline they have to do something. However you can always continue the story with your own sets. A theme may be stopped, but nobody can stop your imagination. ๐
Ohh… Do you know ANYTHING about the new LEGO sets??? ๐
Nace, Kevin would loose his job if he would share that before it is allowed. LEGO has been clamping down tight on those who leak info. It can seriously hurt the company. ๐
Wouldn’t want that to happen… ๐
Wonder if people will be sad when Ninjago dies…
That depends on what comes after it. . . ๐ ๐
i will be sad ๐ฅ
unless of course the replacement is even more awesome!
Well, that’s what Kevin Hinkle says. I guess we just have to wait and see. ๐
I wish Kevin Hinkle will change his decision. Now i’m almost 10 years old and when i become 40 still i will be a fan of ninjago!
Sasuto, it is not Kevin’s decision. Kevin is an employee, not the owner of LEGO. BTW, if you still like Ninjago when you are 40, you should still be able to pick them up on BrickLink, eBay, and who knows what other new places there will be for buying and selling LEGO. Right now you can pick up LEGO sets all the way back from the 60s! So I think when you grow up Ninjago will still be around on the secondary market. ๐
OMG THE SUMMER SETS ARE ALL AT TOYS R US IN CANADA <3 SOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!
Awesome! ๐
first: admin AWESOME is spelled AWESOME ๐
second: i have 74 battle cards and 17 character cards
He-he… are you referring to Lexi’s spelling with all capitals? All right! AWESOME!!! BTW, I wonder where she is. She usually post her stories on Wednesdays. ๐
Hmmm. . . wonder what would come after ninjago. . . Narnia? The Hunger Games? Percy Jackson? Septimus Heap? The Kane Chronicles(also written by Rick Riordan)? The 39 Clues?
Xi, it is most likely NOT going to be a licensed theme, but a theme developed by LEGO, just like Ninjago. ๐
Yeah, probably. Lego usually replaces liscensed themes with other licensed themes – and vice versa. ๐
Actually, the Hunger Games are under construction. After that, I would have to agree
What are the Hunger Games? I haven’t heard of them before.
The Hunger Games is a book series. BTW, it is excellent! I highly recommend you check it out. The first part was also made into a movie that came out just recently. It is awesome! And very intense! I set at the edge of my seat the whole time watching it, and dropped my popcorn! ๐
OK, thanks! ๐
You should totally read the Hunger Games books! A lego theme on HG isnt a bad idea. What would they do with all the blood and killing though? Ive never seen a lego theme with killing in it. and lego is suppose to be a kiddie thing too. So it has to be totally kid approved.
Don’t the licenced themes have killing in them? – maybe thats not shown by lego, but it’s still there ๐
Hmm, well idk but dont the pirates of the carribean have killing in it? lego’s got a theme in that. still, i think it’s a good theme to try but not good in terms of story.
No, something original not that crap. :
Eragon? The Heroes of Olympus? Fairy tales? Just plain old Greek myths? Something else for girls? Apple products? Angry Birds? Star Trek? Something else like Bionicle or Hero Factory? Some popular video game? Looks like we will just have to find out!
Probably something that will have episodes for CN, plus something that’s not like any of the recent themes. Greek something or other does seem like a good idea to me ๐ Probably not something like Hero Factory/Bionicle, at least in my opionion. ๐
LEGO tries to stay away form religious topics, so Ancient Greece is probably not going to happen. ๐
Lego will replace it with an ORIGONAL theme. Something THEY make up.
Zelda!!!
zelda…………….reaaly ๐
NO
First Dragon Ball’s episodes come to an end.In 2009 it was my life’s saddest moments,Michael Jackson finished too.So the next one is Ninjago
Yeah, life always changes. The persons and thing that have passed will live on in our memories. We can continue to appreciate them and also be open and excited about the things yet to come. ๐
WHAT ABOUT BIONICLE!!!!!!??????? I hate everyone everywhere right now. Pouty face.
I’m HAPPY Ninjago is ending! You obsessive fanpeople have to learn to move on! Sheesh! Exclamation point!
Luca, you are at the Ninjago forum, so everyone here naturally going to talk about Ninjago. ๐
Yeah well if it’s possible to fall in love with a toy line, MOST OF YOU HERE HAVE!
Luca, although some people may consider LEGO as nothing more than a toy-line (they would buy sets, build them according to the instructions, then display them or swoosh them around, or whatever). For many of us LEGO is lot more than just another toy. It is a creative medium – like paint, clay, or wood. It can be used to create pretty much anything you can think of! And that is why LEGO is a long-time favorite of not just children, but also adults. It is a hobby that stimulates creativity, imagination, engineering and artistic skills. And, yes, this includes Bionicle. ๐
I meant the amount of attention Ninjago is getting. Look at all the stories people make up, how many posts are about Ninjago on this blog alone, compaired to the other sections, AND THEY HAVE A TV SHOW FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! And if you want to talk about using LEGO as a creative medium, that’s what I do.
Admin, someone suggested that Lego didn’t actually say they were discontinuing Ninjago, just that they didn’t have anything planned for 2014. However, if they have as good (or better) sales in 2013 as this year, they might continue it into 2014. Do you think that’s possible? ๐ ๐
Geneva, nothing is impossible, however what Kevin said is that Ninjago will not be produced beyond 2013. Of course they can change their mind. ๐
Actually, I’m not that disappointed – I was kind of expecting Ninjago to end w/three years (mainly because no one ends with the number four ๐ ); besides, I’m sure Lego will come up with something just as good (if not better ๐ ) to replace it! ๐
But ninjago has cool minifigs! Like the first lego snake minifig. Also the ZX ninja are awsome ๐
Of course, I love ninjago! ๐ But I also think that whatever the next theme will be will probably be really cool as well! ๐
Technically, Season 3 is season 2. So lasting untill 2014 wont surprise me.
Well, it wouldn’t have surprised me that much either; but it seems like Ninjago maybe ending in 2013 – although it is interesting that Wikipedia (and in this case it does semm very unlikely! ๐ ) is saying that season 2 (pirates, at least according to rumor) will start in July! ๐ ๐ – which, BTW, I don’t really believe! ๐
I think I figured out what the stars on the bottom of the cards mean – nothing whatsoever! Seriously, I’ve tried arrangeing them in all kinds of different ways, but there doesn’t seem to be any method. Of course, I don’t have nearly all the cards, so that might make it a little harder, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference. The only thing I can come up with is that LEGO might use them for something next year (kind of like they introduced spinner-crowns this year). Still, that doesn’t seem too likely – I can’t really see what that would be like; plus the spinner crowns didn’t draw on anything from this year.
True…I will check my cards aswell, but I doubt it…Perhaps the number or size of the stars will count?
Size? I’m not quite sure what you mean. I was refering to the stars on the right hand bottom of the cards (character cards as well as battle cards). ๐ ๐ But I think I understand what you mean – maybe something like the number (and size?) haveing to correspond to something else (maybe the number of weapons you have left? . . .) ?) ?? ๐ ๐
Hm… interesting… thanks for the update on this! ๐
I think its how “special” it is, because the free ninjago card TRU gave out last year had 3 stars, while others have 2 or 1
Yeah, that could be. but I don’t see what’s so special about Provoke Anger (oponent can only use fire cards for this spin) – which has two stars and is golden. And why Nya’s character cards would have three is beyond me. Plus, FYI, there are several battle cards that have three stars; backdraft and Wildfire (or is it Volcano?), for example.
I have a cool Ninjago website it’s ninjasofninjago.wordpress.com
It has a lot of the same stories as thebrickblogger but some stories are different so I love for you to check it out! Thanks!
Hm… I tried to check it out but it says that this website is no longer available. ๐
mabey the stars dont mean anything. But when i got Fang-suei all his cards[ including charater] had 3 stars!
yeah, I noticed that. And Nya and Kai DX are very similar – most of their cards (including character) have 3 stars.
So does Mezmo, apparently ๐
oh because i gave u the wrong address! It’s ninjaofninjago.wordpress.com
now u can check it out!!!
And thanks for checking it out!
K-mart is selling Slithraa and NRG Zane now! ๐ According to my brother, they were also selling Lizaru and Bytar, but they aren’t any more.
Aargh! We dont have Kmart where I live!!!!! Why is everything USA?! ๐ฅ go all over the world plz plz plzzzz ๐ฅ
Well, K-mart is just selling them online; plus they have outrageous shipping ๐ and also they have something to do with sears, so you might be able to get one anyways ๐ – but of course, not nesecarially ๐
We have sears!!! yes yes yesssssss!
Oh, well. It’s sold out now, at least temporarially. ๐ Just when I was about to get it, too. ๐
admin di yiu have an pwr cole?
Not yet! ๐
i think the Nrg outfits are , in my opinion, ugly. if it was to represnt them exploding when they’re getting their full potential, all right , that was a pretty good job.
Yeah. I’m of the same opinion. At least with those heads, although they look fairly good w/normal faces.
Yeah!!! I just ordered the Samurai Mech, NRG Jay, NRG Cole, NRG Kai and Choken, and Spitta! Tomorrow I will order Kendo Jay and Kendo Zane! ๐ ๐
Wow! That’s pretty good! The only new spinner you’re missing is Fang-dam (unless you already had him, of course! ๐ ). I got all the NRG (except Zane, of course) but I didn’t get Spitta ๐ ๐
Yes, I have Fangdam.
UPDATE: The NINJAGO Season 3 trailer is now uploaded! Watch and discuss here: NINJAGO Season 3 Trailer Enjoy! ๐
