LEGO The Hobbit sets – first pictures!

Thanks to a poster given away at Toys’R’Us we have a chance to take a first look at the LEGO The Hobbit sets scheduled to be released by the end of this year! Low quality images of the poster have been circulating in the past few days, but as you probably know, taking photos of posters is not easy due to the shiny finish. However Toys-N-Bricks forum member just2good was finally able to take some shots that are much better quality. (You can click on any of the pictures for a larger view.)

#79000 LEGO The Hobbit – Riddles for the Ring: this is a smallish set with a cave, a small boat, Bilbo and Gollum, referring to the scene where Bilbo and Gollum plays a game of riddles with Bilbo’s last question being: “What have I got in my pocket?”

#79001 LEGO The Hobbit – Escape from Mirkwood Spiders: another nice set with a couple of trees covered with spider-web, 2 spiders and 4 minifigures; Legolas, Tauriel, Fili and Kili.

#79002 LEGO The Hobbit – Attack of the Wargs: a wonderful set with a great big tree, a couple of wargs (evil wolves) and five minifigures; two orcs, a warg-rider, Thorin and Bifur.

#79003 LEGO The Hobbit – An Unexpected Gathering: this is the set we have seen before, with the dwarves gathering at the Shire. Six minifigs are included: Gandalf, Bilbo, Balin, Bofur, Bombur and Dwalin.

#79004 LEGO The Hobbit – Barrel Escape: Bilbo and the dwarves get captured by the wood-elves who try to ascertain their mission. The party plans their escape in some wine-barrels. The wine-cellar looks great with lots of barrels and goblets full of wine grape-juice (remember? LEGO doesn’t promote the drinking of alcohol!). There is also a prison, and weapon-racks with plenty of weapons; including a couple of those sweet elven blades.  Five minifigures are included; Bilbo, Oin, Gloin and two elves.

#79010 LEGO The Hobbit – The Goblin King Battle: this is the largest of the sets and is full of awesome details! The set also includes the Goblin King, plus 7 minifigures; Gandalf, Dori, Nori, Ori and three goblins.

#3920 LEGO The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey: the poster also includes this fun twist of the traditional memory-game, which is actually already available at the Online LEGO Shop. See here:

So what do you think? How do you like the first wave of LEGO The Hobbits sets? Which one is your favorite set, and how about the minifigures? Share your thoughts in the comment section below! 🙂

Personally, the Riddles for the Ring set is kinda a let down, and looks like the stuff that they put in other sets to help justify the price. Hopefully we at least get a different face for Gollum.
I don’t know what the Mirkwood Spiders look like in the movie, but I may purchase an extra Shelob or two to make their legs look more spider like (fortunately I was already planning on buying another one anyways). It looks great other than the spider leg issue though.
Attack of the Wargs I think is my favorite right now.The Wargs looks pretty good. Hopefully, if Legends of Chima does reuse this piece, they aren’t too different in printing, so you can swap them out and still look good.
An Unexpected Gathering looks the same as the earlier images. It looks great.
Barrel Escape does have this “issue” of drinking as you adressed. I’m glad to see those green goblets still in use as well as a golden key and the large barrells.
With just this picture, The Goblin King Battle fells kinda unfinished, at least in terms of printing on the big guy and the goblins.

  • At first, looking at these sets, i was viewing them with aww because i had never seen them before, but i was dissapointed by the smallness of the sets for the expected price, but now they are growing on me, especialy the Barrel
    Escape.

  • Micho October 9, 2012, 6:13 PM

if the elves are drinking grape juice, what was Jack drinking in the POTC sets? LOL jk.. just being a pest… I gotta say these sets feel more complete than the LOTR sets from this year except for the Goblin King set, it does look unfinished like Jacob stated

    • admin October 9, 2012, 8:25 PM

LOL! I actually got the grape-juice reference from an interview with a LEGO designer for the POTC sets. The interviewer asked what the pirates were drinking, since LEGO is against promoting drinking alcohol. the LEGO designer, somewhat nervously and half-jokingly said “grape-juice”. 😉

  • Micho October 9, 2012, 6:15 PM

I might use the Barrel Escape to expand my Captain’s Daughter scene from the POTC line.

    • admin October 9, 2012, 8:25 PM

      That’s a splendid idea! 😀

  • LegoFan515 October 9, 2012, 6:38 PM

I might get 79000 because it looks like the cheapest in the series and I really don’t like LOTR or Hobbit that much… 🙂

I like them all . I wish the prices were up to. So, I know how much the sets are and how much money I need.

  • bently October 10, 2012, 9:57 AM

YES!!!!!!!!!!! I love them! goblin king is my favorite not sure how I like the mirkwood spider though.

  • Kenton October 10, 2012, 7:45 PM

They look awesome! I have all the sets from the first LOTR wave, and I will be getting all of these, too. I think the set designs are fine, but I’m more interested in the minifigures and new pieces, anyway. I’ll build my own version if I want the scene to look just right! I’m definitely liking the wargs, the new brown leaf pieces (in the spider set), and the increased number of elves in this wave!

  • Coles Girl October 11, 2012, 10:14 AM

Sweet, I can’t wait. I like the hmm the Attack of the Wargs, and Barrel Escape. They all look Awesome but those are my favs. I really like how LEGO is against Alcohol, because that’s nice picture to put in a kids head.
Grape juice……….Ahh hmm that sounds good right now………..:)

  • Darth Awesome October 13, 2012, 7:00 AM

I WANT THEM ALL!!! My fave would be the unexpected gathering set and my second being the escape from the Mirkwood spiders. I am not sure aout the new Gollum face though…and the goblin king set isn’t the be either, but I am a huge Tolkien freak either way. 🙂

  • Darth Awesome October 13, 2012, 7:02 AM

Are all the Dwarves included in all the sets combined?

    • admin October 13, 2012, 8:32 AM

Yes, I’m sure that all the dwarves will be included in the sets combined. 😀

    • i wonder if all the dwarves are released in the first line of the Hobbit series?

PS im a tolkien fan FFFFFFFFFOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRR.

PSS who cares how ‘let down the sets are’ there hobbit sets for crying out loud WHO CARES?

  • Dude October 14, 2012, 8:08 AM

eventually i might get barrel escape but i am saving up for Mindstorms 2.0 so it will be a while

  • okay for a start all those elves are great to build a small army with and i reckon that insted of Bilbo saving the dwarves from the spiders( as in the book) the elves will save them and take them to their cave. what do you think Admin

    • admin October 15, 2012, 10:53 AM

Yes, having such a great variety of elves is just wonderful! I can’t wait! 😀

  • Strider October 16, 2012, 1:24 PM

Wow these look nice. Rather disapointing that the elves save the dwarves rather then bilbo in the mirkwood set. Do you know when we’ll get the prices?

    • admin October 16, 2012, 2:23 PM

Strider, I believe the prices are already listed on Brickipedia. Just go to their website and do a search on the set numbers. I would link them for you, but I’m having a real issue with Brickipedia; their website is so full of spammy ads that my computer has a really hard time loading the site. 🙁

    • as IIIIIIIIII said

  • but also i agree with u

  • The Ultimate Spinjitzu Master November 13, 2012, 8:52 PM

Why does people always change story-line when they turn a book into a movie? Elves saving dwarves? RIIIIIIIIPPPPPP OFFFFFFFF!!!!
    ELVES HATE DWARVES!!!!!

  • Caleb Terpstra November 23, 2012, 6:24 PM

Are you dumb! Cause you obviously haven’t read the series, and if you had you would know that you’re so called orcs in #79002 are really goblins. READ THE BOOK CLOSELY BEFORE YOU PUT ANY MORE STUFF ABOUT IT!!!!!!!

    • Caleb Terpstra November 23, 2012, 6:27 PM

Well, sorry that I called you dumb!
