LEGO Ideas Contest: We Love Sports!

The LEGO Ideas team launched a new contest, this time all about sports! Sport is something that creates heroes, entertains almost everyone around the world, and brings people together. You’re probably a fan of some kind of sport, or many! The contest is fun, the prizes are generous, and there is a potential for your idea to become an official LEGO set! Below is the announcement from the LEGO Ideas team and other details.

It’s kick off, lights on, shoelaces tied for our new contest! We know that almost everyone around the world loves some kind of sport, in one way or another. You could be a lifelong fan who loves their team, to a casual supporter who watches an event once a year. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is how you can show your love for sports by using – yup, you guessed it – LEGO bricks! The LEGO Ideas Judges will select all the entries that participate in the fan vote.

Excitingly, in addition to the regular contest prizes, we are once again running a contest, which could result in a new LEGO Ideas product, just like the Music to our Ears contest. What this means is that all entries that reach the fan vote phase, will also be included into a special review by the LEGO Ideas review board and will stand a chance of becoming an official LEGO Ideas set if one submission can wow them enough. For full details on what they’re looking for, see the judging section of the contest page. (Please note that like with the regular LEGO Ideas review process, the review phase does not guarantee that any entry will be turned into an official set.)

This contest consist of six phases: 1.) Submission Phase – Build and submit your entry before the February 8, 2021 at 6:00 a.m. EST. 2.) Judging Phase – the LEGO Ideas judges review the entries and choose 10 entries for a fan vote. The judging phase will be February 8-15. 3.) Fan Vote – The fan vote will determine the winners of the grand prize and runner up prizes and will run February 15-25. 4.) Review – The entries that have been selected to be a part of the fan vote will also be reviewed by the LEGO Ideas review board, for the potential of being turned into an official LEGO Ideas set. 5.) Winners Announcement - The grand prize winner and three runner up winners will be shared on LEGO Ideas no later than March 4, 2021. 6.) Contest Product Review Announcement – And finally, in the next review results announcement (date to be announced later), the LEGO Ideas team will also announce the results of this special review, and whether or not one of the contest entries was determined to have sufficient product potential.

Submissions to the contest may be either in physical bricks or by using a digital building tool such as LEGO Digital Designer. You’re welcome to use image editing tools, such as Photoshop, to enhance your photos/presentation. Take up to ten photos of your creation and submit them to the contest. Make sure to show off all angles and any features or functions of your creation.  Add a title and short description, and upload your entry to the contest using the blue Submit Your Entry button on the contest page.

Therefore, make sure you read the guidelines thoroughly so your entry can be approved and is eligible for the contest and review. Some of the additional guidelines are that submissions must be between 50 and 3000 LEGO elements in size approximately. Entries which are too heavily linked with the #10272 Old Trafford Football Stadium, or any previous products related to sports, will not be considered for the product idea consideration part of this contest. You are allowed to use any official LEGO element (LEGO System, LEGO DUPLO, LEGO Technic/Constraction, Mindstorm/Boost, and any other official LEGO electronics) in your entry. The LEGO elements must be genuine (not cut, glued, or otherwise modified). Please be aware that using very old elements that may not exist anymore, and which are crucial to your model, may reduce the chance of your model’s potentials success in becoming an official LEGO Ideas set as the element moulds may not exist anymore. If you are submitting a contest entry based on a third party IP (i.e. a team or personality), then use the LEGO Ideas Intellectual Property verification tool to determine whether or not the IP is allowed. If an IP is not in the database already, you’re welcome to ask a moderator in the comments of the contest announcement blog post or simply submit your contest entry for review.

A panel of judges consisting of members of the LEGO Ideas team will select 10 entries that will participate in the fan vote and the product idea review phase. Hmm, I’m not particularly interested in sports, but however kinda puzzled that Lego has produced a rugby ball piece, but not an American football piece, even though I reckon that an American football would be globally more iconic due to American pop culture. (In most of Europe, except for UK and France, I’d think both sports are pretty niche as team sports go.) And also that there hasn’t been any CMF basketballer produced yet, considering it’s at least in the Top 5 popular sports for most North American and European countries, and features a rather iconic look with the sleeveless jerseys…

You make some really good points. And yeah, the CMF series would have been perfect to release some more sports figures. I guess the issue is that in most sports there is a player number on the jerseys, and it wouldn’t be possible to make a full team.

They’ve usually gotten around the issue just by making a fictive team logo/ name instead.

I could imagine the basketball team “Plate Jumpers”… (Slightly lame joke…)

Sports are waste of time and should be banned at the professional level. Lego needs to abandon anything sports related. Where are the science labs, space imagination, national monuments, and so much more to life than any silly sports.

    • Håkan January 4, 2021, 6:09 PM

Well, to each his own, but “space imagination” has appeared quite frequently in sets, I’d say…

I’m going to strongly disagree here. Sports (or at least some type of exercise) is needed just to maintain normal health. It is a natural function like eating or sleeping. Most people won’t play on a professional level but participating in sports has the added benefit of camaraderie which in turn makes it more likely that people will exercise regularly. Both children and adults do much better mentally, physically, and emotionally when they participate in some kind of sport.

I heard that there are some rumors that they are bringing back the sports theme. And not just big stadiums like Old Stafford. Anyone heard about this? My kids would love a sports theme! I remember those springy legged basketball players were a lot of fun.

I may do something for this. The prizes are too enticing. 😀

Oh! So they are bringing back Lego sports? Cool! I would love to see something great come out of this!

None of the current entries stand out to me. Like, they are cool, but I wouldn’t want any of them as a set. Anyway, there is still time for more entries.

Sorry for being off topic, but I felt this was important news. There are rumors that a new LEGO Star Wars Death Star is coming and it’s going to be the largest set ever with over 11000 pieces for a price of $800. The set number is 75313. Another big set is the 75309 UCS Republic Gunship for $350. I’m super curious to see these! What do you guys think? 😀

    • kay January 5, 2021, 8:54 AM

      Wow, what?! That’s crazy! 😀
