LEGO Master Builder Academy Level 4 coming!

I just got the May-June issue of the LEGO Club Magazine, and I read something interesting on the last page; there is a new LEGO Master Builder level is coming- and this time with a steampunk theme! The LEGO Club Magazine picture shows an awesome steampunk-ish city with high-rise buildings, steam-engine cars and elevated trains, and of course airships of all sizes and shapes. There are also lots of gears and steam everywhere! 🙂

LEGO Master Builder Academy Level 4

In case you are not familiar with the steampunk culture, here is a brief summary from Wikipedia: Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. Therefore, steampunk works are often set in an alternate history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or American Wild West, in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era’s perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the modern authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld, and China Miéville. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace’s Analytical Engine.

LEGO MBA Level 4 - Invention Designer

LEGO fans have been long making steampunk creations – usually characterized by above mentioned fantastic machines and vehicles with dominant colors of brown and gold. In addition the LEGO Monster Fighters theme had somewhat of a steampunk-ish feel. And now it seems like LEGO is going full steampunk with the LEGO Master Builder Academy Level 4 sets!

As you probably know already each level of the LEGO Master Builder Academy contain three kits within a particular theme and focusing on learning various advanced building techniques directly from LEGO Master Builders. Previous LEGO Master Builder (also referred to as LEGO MBA) kits included Space Designer, Microbuild and Robot Designer in Level 1,  Flight Designer, Creature Designer and Auto Designer in Level 2, and Level 3 with a story-building theme, and now we have MBA 4 coming in July!

The LEGO Master Builder Academy Level 4 is called Invention Designer and includes 3 kits (LEGO MBA kits 10-12) as usual with 13 different designs. Below are the descriptions of each set.

this looks cool! and (i don’t wanna sound like a wise person) when you said “lost of gears” did you mean “lots of gears”?

    • admin April 28, 2013, 2:29 PM

Yes, thanks for catching that! I just fixed it. 😀

      • Håkan April 28, 2013, 2:52 PM

I just saw this the other day as well. I have been wanting LEGO to make a Steam Punk line/ set since I got out of my dark ages in 2005. Although these don’t look that spectacular (AFOL creations kinda got my expectations too high), hopefully these will pave the way for more like this. Still hoping that the “The Adventures of Steamrod!” Project on Cuusoo will get enough votes and be made.

Jacob, yeah, I would love to see the Adventures of Steamrod make it! The beauty of the MBA program is really the book and the instructions. The amount you can learn from them is amazing. 🙂

  • Chris April 28, 2013, 10:09 PM

Awesome! I embarked upon a LEGO a Day for 2013 using only the Master Builder Academy Theme with knowing LEGO would be expanding on it. Check out my builds so far at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wiredforsound23/sets/72157632405251889/

WOW! These are incredible! I am floored by the many different color schemes you’ve given to your creations. Makes me want to go build right now!

    • admin April 29, 2013, 9:22 AM

Chris, thanks for sharing! Yoru project is totally inspirational! I just ordered all the MBA kits and once I get them I will surely look thru your project for ideas. I’m also thinking of writing a post about your project as I think it will be helpful to others as well. If you don’t mind. 😉

  • Gabriel April 29, 2013, 12:17 AM

I, too, have all the MBA sets so far (even though I’m an AFOL). I am keeping the books in good condition so my children can learn from them when they are old enough.

I am most excited about the architecture kit. Roman AND Asian buildings? Yes please! And it’s microbuilding, to boot, which has always appealed to me.

Interesting idea for the next levels. Seems like a relatively small subset of LEGO building.

  • coz April 29, 2013, 9:28 AM

    steam punk?

  • Fikko3107 April 29, 2013, 11:36 AM

Sigh. Just sigh. It’s completely unfair for people not living in the western world.

    • admin April 29, 2013, 12:34 PM

Yeah, I feel for you… BTW, do you get the LEGO Club Magazine? There are always special codes and stuff to unlock extra materials on the website. This month there is an awesome build with step-by-step instructions to make Iron Man’s armor closet and laboratory. I thought you might like that. 😉

  • Frank May 2, 2013, 9:08 AM

YES! I knew already from the issue I got a day or two ago, but this is awesome! I LOVE the lego MBA, and this next set looks magnificent! 😀

  • Chris May 5, 2013, 5:09 PM

Very excited to add MBA Level 4 to my source bricks for my LEGO a Day 2013 project built only using the MBA Theme exclusively. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wiredforsound23/sets/72157632405251889/

    • admin May 5, 2013, 7:22 PM

Chris, your project is very inspiring! 🙂

  • Meneldur son of Garamar May 19, 2013, 3:36 PM

I think this is the best MBA kit yet!

    • admin May 19, 2013, 7:26 PM

Yeah, it is very cool. Although I like all of them. MBA is a really excellent program. I learned a lot fromo it and I regularly play around with the sets and the techniques.
