The Lonely Mountain is $130, yet is made up of only 866 pieces? The set looks like something LEGO would charge at most $90 for, and even that’s an expensive price.

In my honest opinion, LEGO’s sets are less appealing to me, yet seem much more costly. I just don’t care for practically any sets I’ve seen recently, which is quite different to how I’ve felt in the past few years.

    • admin October 19, 2014, 2:12 PM

Yeah, that was a shocker for many people. However please note that LOTR is a licensed line, so prices are higher than the norm. In addition, the Lonely Moundain set has that enormous dragon, which required a brand new special mould. If LEGO would have used a standard LEGO Castle dragon fans would be all upset. So we have to pick between either a standard dragon for regular price, or a new dragon but for a higher price.

In general most other LEGO sets are still in the 10 cents/piece price-range or even lower, like they have been for many years (I just bought two modular building where the price/piece is 7 cents – beautiful sets!). But yeah, for licensed sets and special moulds prices are always going to be higher due to the licensing fees and the cost of creating new moulds. LEGO doesn’t have a magic wand to create them. 😉

I wonder if the set could have been made cheaper with a brick-built dragon, as the ones in Ninjago. (They might look a bit bulky, though.) Or the Vikings dragons, looked pretty cool, although they could have been a bit more slithery…

        • admin October 19, 2014, 4:37 PM

That’s actually a really good idea. I loved those Viking dragons! They were very posable and quite scary. The issue with licensed sets though is that they have to go with what the licensor wants.

The cost is really more to do with the custom mold and the size of the objects than the license cost. Just look at the Dino theme that ran back in 2012. Those sets were no where near 10 cents a piece, especially the ones that had the Triceratops and T-Rex.
            http://brickset.com/sets/theme-Dino

Making the dragon brick built wouldn’t really bring down the price much either; you’d just be trading 5-10 pieces of a custom-molded dragon for 250-300 pieces of a brick built one.

People need to prepare themselves for the price per piece ratio to be the same next year in the Jurassic World line.

            • admin October 20, 2014, 11:03 AM

Those are very good points. Yeah, by all indications Jurassic World is going to be pricey. Unless they re-use the Dino moulds. And I wouldn’t be surprized if Dino was in fact released to have the moulds ready for Jurassic World. Licenses like this are usually worked out years before the release, so it makes sense.

I agree it’s way to high! But the hobbit is the best movie I ever saw! Hi everyone again!

Kind of off subject but does anyone know if any Marvel superhero sets will be released in the next wave of sets?

    • admin October 19, 2014, 5:44 PM

My understanding is that the Marvel sets will be coming out with the new movie, which I believe is scheduled for May. So I’m guessing the sets will get released in the spring, instead of the January wave.

    These sets are awesome

But on friday I went to to target and they only had Attack on Lake-Town and The Battle of Five Armies but Target didn’t have the Witch-King Battle

    • admin October 20, 2014, 11:12 AM

Depending on the Target store, some of them don’t carry the largest sets. It just really depends on the neighborhood and what they feel they can sell there.

  • Crazybricks October 20, 2014, 10:53 AM

    Admin where is todays post?

    • admin October 20, 2014, 11:13 AM

I didn’t publish one. A lot of the regulars were not around yesterday, so I thought to give this discussion about the Hobbit sets another day. I really want to hear what you guys think of them. 🙂

  • Chris October 20, 2014, 12:57 PM

That looks very cool. Prices…… -_- Lego loves to troll me sometimes.

    How was Brickworld, admin?

    • admin October 20, 2014, 1:04 PM

It’s this weekend. I’m going on Saturday. 😉

      • Crazybricks October 20, 2014, 3:23 PM

        Whats Brickworld?

      • ninja5 October 20, 2014, 7:10 PM

Oops. :embarrassed: I thought it was this weekend. That makes sense.

        • admin October 20, 2014, 7:21 PM

Not a problem at all. I mix up dates all the time too! 🙄

  • LK901 October 20, 2014, 1:34 PM

They are very nice, but this is sort of old news? They were released three weeks ago. Why do you post news article so late? :S

    • admin October 20, 2014, 1:41 PM

I’m not sure what you mean. The official release date was on the 16th and that’s when they became available at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop. Some retailers may have put them on shelves early by accident, but the official release date was just a few days ago. TBB is not a news site, however with important news like this I try to post it as early as I can fit into the schedule. Again, the relase date was just a few days ago, not weeks ago as you mentioned. Maybe you are mixing them up with the previous wave? 😕

      • admin October 20, 2014, 1:44 PM

Oh, I just checked. I see that you are in a different country, not the USA. So it is possible that you guys got the sets earlier than we did here. I’m in the USA, so I can only report on what’s happening around here. For international news I have to depend on our readers. You are always welcome to report what’s happenning in your country. 😉

  • BLProductions October 20, 2014, 2:27 PM

After closely inspecting the Battle of Five Armies, I’ve decided that I like it, and I think I’ll get it instead of the Black Gate. The other sets look pretty nice as well, better than last year’s. 🙂 Still, the Lonely Mountain’s price…I think it should have been $100, or even $120 would have worked. But $130? It doesn’t deserve that price. 😐
Also, yesterday was my youngest brother’s birthday, and myself and my other brothers are still disgusted at his luck. Put it this way: I want the CMF Pizza Guy, and one of my other brothers wants the Piggy Guy. So guess what Mr. Birthday Boy got. He got 6 CMFs! 😮 A Dino Tracker, a Prospector, a Space Miner, a… Pizza Guy ❗ , and… 2 Piggy Guys! 😡 Unbelievable! And to think that he wanted the Wizard. He also got an Iron Man 3 set (76006), and the Destructoid 70726 just came in the mail. 🙁 Sorry about the rant, but it’s quite irritating for me. 😉

    • BLProductions October 20, 2014, 2:29 PM

Oh, yeah, and check the four newest sets here: http://brickset.com/sets/query-44 (I hope that link works). Hailfire, Anakin’s Custom, ARC-170 Micro, and 2nd Holiday set. 😉

    • admin October 20, 2014, 3:04 PM

LOL! Younger brothers always get the better deals. You should have learned that by now. How do I know? I have five younger brothers!

      • Ike October 23, 2014, 10:43 PM

        I sympthize… I’m the oldest of seven 😉
