LEGO Lord of the Rings: Walk Into Mordor

The BrotherhoodWorkshop just released another fun LEGO Lord of the Rings stop-motion video, this time addressing the question many Lord of the Rings fans have wondered about: “Why didn’t the Fellowship use the eagles to fly into Mordor?” Then we will look at another video where Kevin Ulrich takes us behind-the-scenes and shares how the video was created. 🙂

LEGO Lord of the Rings Walk Into Mordor by The Brotherhood Workshop

Walking into Mordor was a treacherous journey the Fellowship of the Ring had to take – especially for Frodo and Sam who had to walk all the way in. Once they completed their mission a couple of eagles were able to bring the exhausted Hobbits back to safety with no problems. So that makes you wonder; why didn’t they use the eagles in the first place? But as you will see in the video below, eagles can’t solve everything…

Fun, isn’t it? Poor eagles! In the next video you will see how this stop-motion film was created, using some really interesting techniques to give the illusion of flying, depth, and action, as well as manipulating the size of different objects in the scene. Also, note the incorporation of the huge LEGO Barad-dûr built by LEGO fan Kevin Walter.

Here is a picture of the aforementioned LEGO Barad-dûr, with Kevin Walter standing next to it for size-comparison. You can see a lot more pictures in Kevin’s flickr gallery, just click on the link to take you there.

So what do you think? How did you like the LEGO Lord of the Rings: Walk Into Mordor video? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below! And in case you are getting inspired to build something (maybe not as big as the LEGO Barad-dûr above, but still something awesome) you can also browse the current selection of LEGO Lord of the Rings sets at the Online LEGO Shop.

“Oh that is so cool!” Awesome video. I love the cave troll catapults. 😀 I didn’t know about Barad-dûr being made by someone else until I watched the Behind-the-sences video on youtube this morning. 😐 That is the biggest LotR creation ever! Still, it’s not quite minifig scale. 😕
Although…I do kinda like the Fall of Isengard better. 😉
Also, Minecraft minifg scale, 2 sets: http://brickset.com/article/12057/images-of-minifig-scale-minecraft-sets

Oh, and admin, did you mean to say “debt” in “the illusion of flying, debt, and action”? Did you mean “depth”?

Eh… hate that word! Always mis-spell it, and the spell-checker wouldn’t catch it. What would I do without you guys? 😀

          You must be indebted!

He-he… it is not as bad though as automatically typing “ninjago” every time I want to type “ninja”. I have written so many articles on Ninjago that my fingers can’t stop without putting the “go” at the end.

I’m thinking about waiting to write about the Minecraft set until we have all the pictures. I actually have preliminary pictures of all of them that were sent to us by a reader, but I think I will wait until we get better ones of all the sets.

I love the video, the details are great as always. The orcs voices are undeniably cute. But I will say that in the original LotR books and The Hobbit, the eagles were among the highest of creatures, and they were respected immensly. You couldn’t just go and ask them to carry you somewhere and be sure they would take you. I’m not sure if they would have helped if Gandalf had requested, but they are more important then most people realize. I’m actually not sure if the orcs reaction was exaggerated or not :). I think that there is a bit of difference between the Brotherhood Workshop’s comissoned videos and their own ones. I think the storyboard the Lego group creates is a bit more cartoonish, while their original works are more funny for fans of middle earth and less generic feeling.

That’s a good observation about the difference between the LEGO sponsored and the other videos. And thanks for reminding us about how special the eagles were.

I have one thing to say about that Barad dûr. Oh my freaking gosh! =O I want it so bad. XD

I follow a guy who made a LOTR Mod for Minecraft. He posted someone’s picture explaining the eagle thing. Here’s the link: http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tickld.com%2Fx%2Fthis-guy-just-changed-the-way-we-see-lord-of-the-rings-mind-blown&h=hAQFKslrm&s=1

That’s actually really interesting and pretty logical too. I wonder what Tolkien say about it.

I can’t access the link. It says there’s an error when I click on it. 😕 Darn, I wanted to see if his reasoning is the same as mine. 🙁

There should be a box at the center of your screen when you click the link, at the bottom right corner of said box there is a button that says “Follow Link”, click it.

Thanks. It’s cool how it all fits, but it was based on the movie, and therefore rather incorrect. 😕 In the book, Gwaihir the Windlord takes Gandalf to Edoras in Rohan, and from there Gandalf rides to the Shire. There was no time for Gandalf to make plans with the Eagles, but if the Fellowship had followed his plan (from the link), they could have gone to the Eagles and maybe persuaded them to go to Mordor. But if the eagles disagreed, then they’d have to walk all the way south. 😕

I ran into the same issue, but then I just hit the button that said follow the link, and then it came up. Here is the direct link. It should work: http://www.tickld.com/x/this-guy-just-changed-the-way-we-see-lord-of-the-rings-mind-blown

This theory only fits with the films; most of the events mentioned in that post only fit in with the film storyline. Also, Gandalf uses the word ‘fly’ in lots of places in the book to mean ‘flee’

There is an article refuting that post that I recommend you read: http://middle-earth.xenite.org/2014/08/07/did-gandalf-really-mean-to-use-the-eagles-to-destroy-the-one-ring/

This theory only fits with the films; most of the events mentioned in that post only fit in with the film storyline. Gandalf never ‘sends’ for eagles, the eagle who rescues him from Orthanc was sent by Radagarst as a messenger. Also, Gandalf uses the word ‘fly’ in lots of places in the book to mean ‘flee’
